It is a new year and the 35 Gunner has been a joy to shoot but of course when the itch for something new starts then it just keeps itching.
I think I could develop a new caliber but at the other hand I might just stick to a known caliber, perhaps one I have dies for, and just build an specialty rifle.
I might use the donor rifle to show some of the bedding and accuracy concepts we are discussion with Mr. @MilesTeg and then get more deeply into the chambering, headspace, reloads, trigger etc.... and progress as we go.
So now the question is to decide what to do. I know Mr. @Gunner57 is going to propose something but perhaps others can chime in with innovative ideas.
I don't like to do a project just to have another rifle so I am going to outline some options that I think are attractive and why. I don't have a problem with main stream rifles and calibers but I am always looking for that one thing or two a rifle does that is going to be different and perhaps provide a better alternative in one or several areas or resolve a common problem. One conditions, it has to be accurate. I don't care much for rifles or rounds that are not accurate.
A) 375 Whale Killer: I have been observing the idea to build a 375 RUM package. This will put me in the whale legal hunting category and anything smaller than that. I just don't know I have the guts to pull the trigger. I thought about the 375 ruger but I find myself wondering once one crosses over to the dark side, why stop there?
B) 35 Whelen or 358 Winchester bolt action: These are close to the whale killer but in a more civilized package with a lot less cost. Plenty of great bullets for hunting and then 357 bullets for inexpensive practice as well as having the 308 and 30-06 rifles as donors. These are some of the most overlooked cartridges but with amazing killing power for the cost. At the average ranges one will never need a magnum having these cartridges and to tackle anything. A new AR10 carbine upper in 358 winchester would be pretty darn cool too.
3rd and 4th from the left...
C) An insanely accurate rifle in 7mm-08. I could build this in a bolt action but also in the AR10 with a heavy barrel. Grain per grain this is the best long range round out of a 308 case offspring although it is not marketed like that but I want to build one to improve on another one I have and test the long range limits of the round. Whatever we do we have to show quarter moa accuracy.
D) An insane accurate rifle in 6mmBR. I have been shooting this for quite some time so it is time to re-barrel. I want to try 3R rifling and potentially have this amazingly accurate round hit top accuracy but from a mid-heavy barrel or even from an AR15. It is amazing what this round does with that much powder and just 21-22 inches of barrel.
Thoughts?
