NY compliant AK47 options

I suppose I should give an update on the latest mod to my Yugo AK.

I've always hated the spur grip, which is why it sat in the safe pretty much since I put it on, so I decided to look at some alternatives. The Boar grip doesn't work at all. I was thinking of going with a grip wrap, but decided to try the Monsterman grip.

It is designed to work with a Romanian AK, but on their website it states a customer was able to modify it to fit on their Bulgarian Arsenal SAM7r, so I decided there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to make it work on my Yugo.

After a little grinding and dremeling, it fits! And yes, it's pretty comfortable to shoot too. Especially compared to a spur. Nothing is as good as the original design of course, but this will suffice.

Ah so you ditched the spur completely?

Honestly, it is the fastest solution to quickly give an AK something to hold onto, while still keeping it compliant, but I agree it's a little lacking.

I'll never buy or own another spur grip.

I had to modify the spur grip to fit on my Yugo too. It really wasn't any harder to modify the Monsterman grip.

Did you ever run into any compliance issues with the spur? Still, to this day, haven't seen a single determination on any of these "grips" of any sort. At least, not to my knowledge.

Nope, and they are still selling AK's with spur grips at gun shows and gun stores all around the state.

Thordsen now has a stock for the AK. It's ugly but it turns it into a functional weapon that you can hold on to.

I thought they ruled against thumb-holes? That's what I've been avoiding anything like that for my AKs.

Yeah, it's more like a slot. Definitely not a hole.

In fact, many years ago on a forum far, far away, it was suggesting cutting out part of the thumbhole of my VEPR in that same kind of configuration, but I felt it would weaken the stock.

That's not a bad idea. You should do it. Just buy an unaltered stock as a backup if it breaks. I don't think regular handling will break it though.

I have multiple unaltered stocks already, but I'm not going to bother. My wood working skills are decent, but not good enough that I want to risk an unaltered stock, when my reason for having them is to put my VEPRs back to original configuration when I move out of state someday.

Yeah, that's a bunch of bullshit. There is NOTHING in the SAFE Act about permanence when it comes to pistol grip. They are pulling that out of their ass.

A potential SAFE Act II, on the other hand....

I’ve got one, works just as well as the AR stocks, but, if you have the kalashnikov variant you’ll need to do some drilling into the trunnion cover.

Rear trunion if I'm not mistaken.

Yup, as Edward stated, the kalashnikov has a rear trunnion and that kit comes with a cover for it so that the AK’s internals aren’t exposed to the elements. Both variants use the same gen III piston version of the Thordsen and have a plastic adapter to attach the stock to the AK.

If you check out their website and read the product description for each variant, it’ll tell you which kind you need and also gives some examples (e.g. RAS 47 is a kalashnikov variant).

Gas tupe is longer on the Zastavas. Some have a AK-47 Type 3 features in the barrel weight, gasblock shape, etc. The butt (fixed type) uses a long bolt like a lee enfield. The first Yugoslavian AK was the M64. Some may or may not have grenade launching gas cut off gas blocks and flip up sights.
