NY Compliant Glock Carbine Build

You can possess a rifle in any state except for NJ (and maybe Cali? I don’t know), but definitely not have a pistol anywhere unless you have a permit or are in a few specific states.

Actually, mere possession of a pistol doesn't require a permit in the vast majority of states.

Most permits are only for concealed carry, Having a pistol for range use or home defense is no different than a pump shotgun in almost every state.

I actually can't think of another state that requires a license to own a handgun. Hell even Cali and Hawaii you can own one with out any license. (Maybe new jersey but even then I think NY is alone)

Looks like a REALLY expensive undertaking.

You still need a Gen 4 slide assembly, trigger, mag release mechanism, and the other doo dads that go inside the frame.

There is a Glock 17 minus the frame on Ebay right now. the guy had it on a Polymer 80 . Current bid is $380.
Unfortuneatly, it is a Gen 3 and you need a Gen 4 kit.

So $300 ( msrp ) for the L, S & B
$150 for the Easy Bolt
$400 for the Glock kit
$160 for the Polymer 80

So for $1k you have a Ghost Gun..

I admire the attempt to work around the system but seems like a bit much.

If he's doing a 80% "glock" lower then he would need a gen 3 slide not a gen 4

Man that's a nice looking carbine shell, I hear the build quality is solid. My only concern with that is how to make it bolt action for SAFE compliance.

In the shell as a pistol it is fine in ny (with a brace).

Otherwise the barrel is too short for ny as a carbine.

Good catch. Though they make a kit which comes with a 16 inch barrel to go the carbine route.

Apply for your pistol permit and buy a carbine fed with Glock mags (see @Bullet Guy ) to use while you wait. When permit arrives pick up a G17/34 and you're gtg with 2 quality firearms and no "frankensteined" solution.

The Polymer 80 frame website does not state what gen slide is needed. It does mention " 3 Pin " Glock but I do not know what that means.
As a pistol, it would appear that Gen 3 parts would work.

The Carbine kit in the link provided by the OP only fits on a 4th Gen Glock . The article infers that manufacturer has mods for earlier gen units but this is Gen 4 only.

If you watch Hank Strange's video, that lock, stock, and barrel isn't very reliable. He had nothing but problems. Add that to an 80 percent and the problems will probably magnify. Add a fixed magazine to it and you will have nothing short of a disaster. I wouldn't do it.

Get the Ruger carbine. It'll be legal here and in NJ without any issues at the same length.

While in NY, have the 16" barrel installed and be legal. When in a state that does not require a pistol permit for possession or use, swap barrels and remove the stock.

Ahh. I understand now. Do the 80 percent. Buy 2 of them. One to fix the magazine and one as a spare to fix the magazine later if you mess up.

While this is more expensive than a lock, stock, and barrel kit, it is reliable and looks better. If you run into any malfunctions, you'll know that it'll more than likely be with the 80 percent rather than not knowing if it's the 80 percent or the lock, stock, and barrel kit that is normally plagued with malfunctions.

I know but what’s the point then? In most states it would basically have to be locked up the whole time so why even bring it?

Well it looks like polymer 80 just came out with a v2, literally a few weeks ago when looking into doing a 80% build everyone available all said specifically gen 3 only

The mechtech looks like a great kit, but it has a built in slide. I feel like having to keep a separate slide for use as a pistol along with a built out lower would fall under possessing a handgun without a permit. Thoughts?

If it starts as a pistol it can be a rifle and then back to a pistol.

That was my understanding too. I could legally build it as a pistol out-of-state, put the carbine upper onto it and since the carbine upper would fall under NY state's definition of a rifle it would no longer be considered a pistol.

That's correct if it didn't originally start off as a pistol. The same would apply with the lock, stock, and barrel. Since the OP doesn't have a pistol permit, it would have never started out as a pistol because if it did, he'd be illegally possessing a pistol.

They're overpriced. The breakdown is horrendous for maintenance. The grip angle is god awful. Not as good overall an AR9 will be.

New lower prices now. Around $600.
Breakdown is so simple even I can do it.

I will not transfer a stripped glock lower. I know i can. I know it is legal, but indo not want to be a co defendant in court. It will be. A hard sell trying to convince anyone in ny that that glock lower is not a pistol under ny law.

Again, perfectly legal to transfer a glock lower as an other. But i am still not doing it.

16 states have constitutional carry no permissions needed from the gov.

Yep, I'm not planning on going through an FFL for the lower. My understanding is that a Glock lower with a stock and 16 inch barrel should be legal without a pistol permit while an AR lower with no stock and configured under 26 inches would require a pistol permit.

Does anybody know any other factors which could play into the legality here? As it stands I'm considering the RONI carbine kit, loctite/stripping the RONI screws around the Glock frame, and designing some bolt-action mechanism that works by blocking the slide on the RONI like the California Easy Bolt I linked earlier.

I like the Roni, if you could find a good way to make it bolt action I think you're good to go. Does the law explicity say the rifle has to be bolt action? If it can be just a single shot I think you're good to go. If it says bolt action you might have difficulty. Looking at how the Roni encloses the glock, there doesn't look like a way to arrest the action while still leaving it capable of manipulating the bolt. If you put something inside that arrests the action (but requires you to take it apart to cycle the action) it could be argued by a DA that you manufactured a "broken semi auto"
