I have a Saiga sporter in 223. It's basically an Ak without a pistol grip, flash suppressor, upgraded trigger and probably a few other mods. For people unfamiliar it's basically a standard rifle w detachable mag but with no pistol grip or flash suppressor. I was wondering if I thread the barrel and put a flash suppressor on it but leave no pistol grip, does the flash suppressor alone make the rifle non-compliant????

Adding just one banned feature to it will make it illegal. So the answer is yes. A threaded barrel is a banned feature for a semi-auto rifle that can accept detachable magazines.

if the flash suppresor can come off...threaded barrel...its a no no in NY!!

its my understanding muzzle devices need to be pinned and welded or just welded...permanent......but if im wrong someone with chime if but agree with above responses....

The only way for you to do what you want legally, for now anyway, would be to also fix the magazine so it cannot be removed. Leave it the way it is, muzzle devices aren't worth the hassle and definitely not worth trading for a detachable magazine.

IIRC this will also make it not compliant with 922(r)

The correct answer is: LEAVE THE STATE, that way you don't have to worry about it

Same here. Picked up the 7.62 but also wanted the 12ga and 410 shotguns. I put off purchasing and then FUAC happened.

And Definitive Arms does that. Or you can buy a Krebs Custom that has the magwell mod already done. They are very expensive AKs to be sure. Top of the line Kalashnikovs.
That magwell modification has to be done in house by Definitive Arms. It's not a bolt on part.
It's a chunk of machines steel that the shop has to fit and weld to the receiver. Nice thing is that it adds manual and last shot bolt hold open function.

If you take a stock saiga (imported with 14 parts on the parts list) and add another part such as a muzzle device that is adding 1 extra part and is not a sporting part. To do that then the Op would have to change a bunch of other parts to be US made parts (trigger and magazine are a start)

The OP, being in NY couldn't even have that in the first place.
BTW you can get a 6.5 Grendel version. Isn't that a cool and particularly well suited cartridge for the rifle?

I know he cant have any of that in the first place I was just pointing out that it isnt just a safe act violation but a bull shit Bush Sr. Federal ban as well.

And I would love to have more saigas in all the calibers even .308 but noo thanks Obama for that import ban (and veprs veprs would be sick to still be able to get regularly....... thanks trump)

I recall seeing them regularly for under $350 and a few sale instances at $299 for the .223 and 7.62x39 versions.
IIRC, the .308 was regularly a little more? $379?
