The faster they go the more recharging they get right? They should put solar powered windmills on the busses.

Our rural district has already started a study to prepare for this disaster. Issue #1 - The bus garage will need to be retrofitted and new power lines run at the tune of over a million dollars. Issue #2 - Some routes will need to be split due to battery life..no joke. Our district spans many many miles. One route has to go out 45 minutes to get some kids.
This is one big cluster fuck
I do not agree with EV practicality in any instance other than personal urban use and especially do not agree with mandates, but it will be no appreciable difference in road wear. Yes, an EV school bus is heavier but still in a 33/36K gvw chassis, same as a diesel, and is only making 2 runs a day.Wait til they see what the increased weight does to the tarmac.
As you state it was approved with the budget vote as most things are these days in NYS. This should be illegal."
School districts across the state will have five years to begin purchasing electric-powered school buses.
Legislation included in the 2022-23 state budget approved last week includes two timelines for school districts to begin using electric buses — a 2027 deadline to begin purchasing them and a 2035 deadline for schools around the state to have an all-electric school bus fleet. According to the Albany Times Union, the budget legislation does allow the state Education Department to delay the 2027 deadline if costs are too high or if parts aren't available. School districts can also apply for a one-time, two-year waiver from the requirement, according to the Times Union."
I do not remember voting for that .. did any of you .. ??
this State Budget should be a we the people vote .. ..
because 99 % of are reps do not do what we tell them to do ..
As you state it was approved with the budget vote as most things are these days in NYS. This should be illegal.
What we did vote on(I voted no) and passed was for small schools to be able to borrow any amount of money and change the state constitution on this. Now I see why. Of course NYS passed this crap.
Remember NYS will be doing carbon taxing soon and your gas bill is projected to increase by as much as 80%, gasoline to go up by $0.62/gallon and then what’s that mean for your electric bill. Buying busses and the cost to heat schools will make budgets and taxes soar. Remember every bus will need its own level III charging station so how much will that cost. There will be thousands around NYS then they will all be replaced with hydrogen at some point.
Where will these busses come from? Who will repair them? EVs are less reliable.
Also how much of a difference will this make? I can’t imagine much pollution comes from these busses for these short drives? Also what many do not understand is that the bus companies also use these school buses for other events and now they will need two of them. My kids district also recently traveled from north of Buffalo to Bemus point for a track meet so that won’t be happening anymore. Pure stupidity so these morons feel good or something.
These Bills are invariably passed by the overwhelming representation of the densely populated Blue areas such as NYC and Long Island, where they see lots of vehicles, traffic, people while ignoring the rest of the State. They do the same thing with Guns: lots of crime and crimes committed with guns, and they reflect their desires on the rest of us...I fully support the idea of a "New Amsterdam" leaving NYC to its own vices. As you state it was approved with the budget vote as most things are these days in NYS. This should be illegal.

I can tell you right off the bat, keeping an electric car sitting is bad news. Let alone keeping it plugged in all the time. I don't care what kind of battery management it's got. After 3-5 years, you automatically shave upwards of 20% off battery life.electric buses..wait and see what the "opinion" of them is when one ignites. It would be like all the kids riding inside a micowave oven. Another cart before the horse legislation. My 2 cents is there is more to be concerned with the electric vehicles up north as the weather is harder on the batteries/system. I have a friend who has one..loves it..( any negative reason for not having one, he has a defending answer) but stores it in the winter like a classic car. Who has 60k plus for a fair weather driver ?
Great, except parents work. That's not an option for 99% of the population. Here is the way you fix the problem. Parents take their kids to school, parents pick them up from school. No buses are needed.
There, i just solved the over taxation to the people who are swindled & forced into paying school taxes!
They can’t hire bus drivers now. They are paying a friend of mine $30/hour to drive a school bus.Our school district has already determined they'd have to, at minimum, double their bus fleet to be able to handle bussing in a single day. They'd essentially need a fleet for the morning and a fleet for the afternoon runs.
Probably not 99% but yes that’s a huge issue. My son rides the bus but we could drive him but it’s a hassle. I’ve got one year left and I’m thrilled.Great, except parents work. That's not an option for 99% of the population.
I mean, we have enough drivers right now (well, enough to get it done, I'm sure they'd prefer more). The biggest issue our district has, as a rural district, is distance. It's also entirely possible, like others have said, is that they'd need to increase the routes due to battery range (especially in the winter), so MORE than double the fleet. That's just not realistic. At all. They can’t hire bus drivers now. They are paying a friend of mine $30/hour to drive a school bus.
School buses would be better. You have no clue how long you might need a dump truck to move snow for. You get a bad storm you could be out moving snow all day. School buses you know this is the time they will be needed for. Yes there could be a circumstance that comes up here and there but for the most part schools are closed in poor weather. The issue is the cost and in rural areas the range.A buddy of mine works for the town here, they got to test out an electric dump truck for winter plowing, I asked him what his thoughts were on it, All he said was a literal "Hah" I cant picture school buses being any better
Maybe because you’re in a rural area but by me they can’t find drivers. Signs up everywhere looking for them and high pay. Last year they were going to have issues even moving the kids because they didn’t have enough of them.I mean, we have enough drivers right now (well, enough to get it done, I'm sure they'd prefer more). True
I’m not saying they are there yet or I support this but an electric school bus could get the job done. The question is, is it worth it? Nope.True
Interscholastic sports just gasped it’s dying breath, because there’s no way a bus load of athletes is getting to an away game and home again on a battery powered bus in our school district. I imagine it’s the same across the majority of the state. But that’s actually ok, as now they can just skip the games and straight to the Participation Trophy ceremony and call it done.Im shocked how ignorant so many people are of simple physics. The grid will need major upgrades to charge all these busses every night. And you're not gonna generate all this extra juice with jist wind and solar.
Many districts will need 2 fleets, a 1st run and 2nd run, as the busses won't go all day and can't be recharged fully in the small window of time they have between runs.
