I think there's some legitimacy to it, but on the other hand, it lets the intruder know you're there, too.
A sane man would probably run away, not willing to risk his life. But should you happen to encounter the mythical "300 lb meth-head", I doubt you'll see results. Then again, I would argue that most criminals are fundamentally irrational anyway, so maybe I'm overestimating things.

On another note... I believe most shotguns can be slam-fired with one in the chamber, can't they?
What are your thoughts on "slide back" as an alternate to using the safety? In this case, I'm talking about any gun, whether a shotgun, handgun, rifle or otherwise.

I am not an expert on this in the least but this is true of the Ithaca's that followed the lineage of the classic "trench gun." I do not believe this is true of other manufacturers but again, I could be wrong on this.
Shotgun, maybe. Handguns, rifles, no.

Hm... Certainly for something like a Glock, I agree. "Pick up and go".
On the other hand, maybe it'd be better suited to something like a 1911 or similar platform? I believe Star Model BM's for example (not quite 1911's, I know) have the firing pin resting on the primer if I'm aware. So in that case, I'd be nervous keeping hammer down, safety on, or even hammer back should something go wrong.
Maybe this is evidence that they're an antiquated design, but I guess that's up to interpretation. Any good resources for deciding these kinds of things, and really summarizing different methods of carrying and/or deploying these guns for home defense?

This should be your response as soon as you hear a weird noise in your house. Racking a shotgun is 50/50. This has a 99% effectiveness rate of getting the intruder to go running.
Haven't read all the posts, and probably won't. I'll just answer the OP question...
If I (god forbid) ever have the distinct need to grab my shotgun because I perceive a threat which may endanger my life, or the lives of others, the only thing the unfortunate recipient of the business end of the shotgun "may" hear, is the click of the hammer right before the slug is expelled by the shotgun as it discharges due to the expansion of gases from the firing of the cartridge ignited by the primer the hammer hit after dressing the trigger!

But it will certainly be the last thing heard by that unfortunate person(s)!
No racking to give warning, or reveal my position, or better yet, eject a perfectly good cartridge I may have need of... Who the fuck would do that anyway, when they think the need their shotty in the first place?
So if I'm carrying a handgun condition 1 should I eject my chambered round prior to using my handgun? To try and scare someone?... If that seems absurd, then the same application/rule applies to shotgun, rifle, etc.
If a deadly threat exists, there is no legal requirement to inform intent... No necessity to determine their intent... You only need to identify the deadly threat in order to act and defend yourself. Any other thinking, any delay, such as racking a firearm, could cost you your life! Remove it from your thinking... And don't preconceive silly notions that you "know" what someone will do when they hear the racking, ie, they will disengage!

I have a 12 gauge under the bed. Along with a 1911, 45 ACP in the nightstand and my H&K VP9 in the top dresser draw.
All of them are loaded. All of them are chambered and none of the safeties are engaged, I would have no reason to Rack the gun to load.
Maybe the sound would scare off the Mutt, maybe it would not.
I do not think the intention should be to scare the bad guy. I own guns to stop any and all threats, not to make a noise.

Shotguns are already limited in capacity. Why anyone would keep their get busy gun unchambered is beyond me.
I would never pick a shotgun as a home defense tool for reasons I stated in other threads but if I did, it would be chambered, ghost loaded, and the magazine would be topped off.
Nobody would do that out in the street with a pistol so why at home?

Anyone not afraid of the business end of a 12ga., probably isn't gonna give a rats ass about the sound of the action closing. If its my house that round is already chambered and ready to go. I'm not wasting a round just to sound scary. My house is small enough that if an intruder is already inside I wont have time to be playing Joe Biden games. The intruders getting a few verbal commands, what happens after that point is up to him/her.

Damn, really good thread I started here. This was all prompted by some jackass on another website calling me stupid for not knowing that racking a shotgun can scare off the intruder. Idk where he got that idea from after I told him to stop being an idiot and endangering other people's lives by spreading this stupid fucking myth.
Me personally. I just keep a loaded AR, unchambered on safe ready to go as well as a half racked shotgun with a shell in the loading port so as I grab the gun it Chambers the round by grabbing right on the forend.

i would never Rely on it, but when i was twenty at my mom house it happen to me!
I was home from college, everyone but me was gone (no Cars home). i heard someone rattle the front door and windows. i then heard them try and force the garbage doors. so i went to the basement got the winchester and stood by the fireplace. when they tried to lift the sliding glass door out of the track, i racked one in the chamber and i heard feet beat!
looked out the window and it was a dirty hippy type running down the driveway. (one of my brothers friends i think)

Anything you add into the situation beyond your training introduces a potential fail point. You're already in a stressful situation that you had hoped would never happen, possibly awakened from a solid sleep. You short stroke the shotty as a warning while half asleep or hyped up on adrenaline and you may have just screwed yourself and your family.
at the time where i grew up, i had assumed it was someone breaking in to steal the TV, stereo, guns or money.

All firearms that I keep in the bdrm are ready to go in case they’re needed. Any long gun that is ready will be with muzzle down in the quick access safe. Any long gun not ready to go is muzzle up. No confusion that way
