Opinions on racking a shotgun to scare off a home intruder.

My last attempted home invasion was a team of four (2 entrants, 1 lookout, 1 remote driver) What I need is a normal capacity magazine instead of the FUAC limited round handicap (apparently FUAC wants to make it more sporting for criminals) and NY reloads.Dude, its a shotgun, why would they ever hear anything after the first shot? you need more practice!

i think it depends on a lot of elements. if lived in the hood, everything would be Hot and ready to go.
I Dont, i have an alarm system and better yet a DOG. she is amazing and never wrong.
Home protection is very handy and my house is hard to get into.
I dont live on the south side of Chicago, even though if i am in and out of the house working on the yard or car i am carrying! (one in the pipe!)

Racking gives away your position. Let your wife rack the shotgun.
I know for a fact it can work.
Ive had 2 personal experiences.
One was a friend who racked his shotgun when someone was trying to get into his house.
The other was me hearing the sound.
I was 14 years old and had very little experience with guns.
There was this sweet pond down the road on an old mans private property.
The rumor was that he would shoot you with rock salt if he caught you swimming in his pond.
Me and a couple friends dared to try.
The pond was behind his barn, his house was on the other side of the barn.
We could get to the pond from the woods, out of sight from the house.
We made it to the pond and my friend jumped in. He quickly got out and all was good. We all walked onto the dock, ready to jump in.
We heard the slam of a screen door, so we slowly walked off the dock and got to the woodline. Then we heard it, a shotgun racking. We knew what it was and ran.
I looked back to see the old guy come around the barn, shotgun pointed and ready.

No need to rack. I am always red.
Knowing that any situation will be fluid and impossible to plan for, I take the approach of "hardening" my castle. Put yourself in the shoes of the criminal visitor and I will give you a partial guided tour.
The house is off the road a bit so I expect you will come in by way of the driveway or, at least, will have looked down the driveway once before making entry. That's where you may notice the sign saying the property is under video surveillance. That might be your first warning.
If you continue on and approach any of the buildings you will activate motion sensor lighting. That should be your second warning.
If you pay no heed to these warnings and enter any building you will set off an alarm. And you will find find you are in a lighted area. Those night lights are not so I can find my way to the bathroom at night.
Now, you may have chosen to enter the house by way of the basement level. Okay. Have fun. Set up a hobo camp down there if you feel like it. Turn on the TV and catch some of The Late Show. I don't care. I'm not coming after you. As a taxpayer I have guys with badges on my payroll that will come and root you out of there. The same goes for the outbuildings. Have a ball. Just don't get too comfortable, you'll be leaving soon.
But should you choose to enter on the main floor then you will find that the "living" area is lit by several of those night lights as is the hallway leading to the "sleeping quarters". And all those doors are either closed or dark. You will have no idea what awaits you behind those doors or in that darkness.
So now you find you are in a lighted area with an alarm going off and facing either closed doors or scary dark doorways. I sincerely hope that at this point you will come to your senses so I won't be up much more than an hour or so talking to the deputies that are on their way.
'Cuz I'd be really pissed if it turned into an all-nighter with a driveway full of flashing lights, a house full of investigators, and my wife sweeping up broken glass and drywall dust.

Ok let me rephrase that. Full magazine in the gun. However I have to keep it locked up due to not trusting some people I love with. So the extra second to charge it is semi negligible to me.

Ha ha ha. I have seen people under (no)stress shooting 3 gun “fall apart” due to no rack, safety, forgetting to shoot targets etc etc.
Come out and try it. You will be surprised. AND no one in 3 gun is trying to harm/shoot you!

Racking it gives away your exact location with just sheetrock and a couple of 2x4's protecting you. Roles reversed, I'm partially unloading directly at any threatening sound (especially that one) right thru the wall.
Warning the perp is for fools.
Though honestly, studies have shown that Security Systems that respond with the sound of a mean dog barking often deters burglars.

Undeniably, giving up your general location and the element of surprise is a tactical loss.
Also undeniably, there's a nonzero chance that it would end the threat, in more ways than one: the enemy retreats/surrenders, or, scarily, your teenage son says "DAD DON'T SHOOT" as you catch him sneaking in at 4AM.
There's a solution in between: dogs. A fantastic alarm and first line of defense. And they'll calm down when they see it's your son.
