Optics decision time.

Now that all I'm waiting on for my nygf build is the funds to order the rest of the parts, lets talk optics. My current considerations are
Vortex strike eagle 1-8 ~500
Vortex razor hd 1-6 ~1200
Eotech 4 dot model ~500 + g33 magnifier ~500
Trijicon accuppwrr 1-4 ~700
Vortex amg holographic ~500 + vortex magnifier ~300 (if they're compatible, not actually sure)

Looking for opinions and considerations here. I like most all of these optics and have handled all but the accupower and amg. As you can see my price range is all over the board but the razor hd is absolute top out as far as price, and any scope that requires a mount will most likely go into a vortex cantilever mount or an aero precision one piece mount. And if anyone knows a place that has the accupower on long island so i can go fondle it let me know. I know where i can find an amg to play with.

For similar cost and weight of the Vortex Razor HD there are also the Burris XTR II 1-8 (34mm tube, Japanese glass), the Primary Arms 1-8 (also 34mm tube and Japanese glass) And the Trijicon Accupower 1-8 (again 34mm tube, dunno bout the glass proly American or Japanese) For a budget scope the Strike Eagle series are a good bet.
The 1-8 scopes are all quite large and heavy, consider a 1-6 for less weight.
The 1-4s are generally all quite light andnwith the wide spread arrival of 1-6 and 1-8 scopes have been discounted.

Standard model is 2nd focal plane. There was talk of a first focal plane version but I don't know if its available yet. Either way its still the heaviest of all the 1-6 scopes at 25oz! Does have amazing glass and FOV though. Also daytime bright illumination.

Good glass is generally heavy. But, is that weight with the mount? I think the vcog may be a bit heavier?

No it's second. I have this optic, it does add a little weight but it has an amazing sight picture. Great quality product.

What do you plan on using this build for, so I can make a suggestion?

25oz is the weight without mount. The VCOG's weight includes its integral mount.
VCOG is too expensive for what it is. Supposedly its the toughest variable scope you can buy and that's the only reason to buy one. In terms of optical clarity and features one can do better with scopes that cost 1k less.

Competition and taking down hordes of paper. A bit of extra weight doesn't bother me if its for a good optic. I did take a look at the sig tango4 which is a ffp. Damn nice scope but I was disappointed to look through it and see a less than 1x 1 power. The zero stop is a nice feature that i had never seen in person before. I don't need this to be bomb proof, but I will be running it through its paces which is why I liked vortex for the warranty. Bit if a vortex fanboy I'll admit. Sfp is fine considering I may only need to use the bdc hashes when I'm at max power anyways. I do love the strike eagle bdc2 reticle. What are the opinions on magnifier holographic combo? Any use to it for my purpose or no weight to utility? Biggest priorities are clarity of glass and intuitive controls.

I keep coming back to the new 1-6 Trijicon Accupoint for its tolerable 19oz weight, high clarity glass, no battery simplicity, and ruggedness. I'm of the same mind as you regarding the 2nd FP. I figure I'll moslty be at either 1 or 6 power.
Another scope I am imterested in is the Eotech VUDU. It is of similar weight with a 1-6 range but it is 1st focal plane with a reticle that takes real advantage of that fact. It lacks a zero stop or capped turrets though which completely baffles me. Otherwise I'd definitely go for it.

Ill have to look at the eotech you're talking about. Never heard of that before.

How many 3 gun comps actually go to 600 yds? I'd say from 200 yds in the red dot + magnifier is very viable. 2 things though.
1 The combo will likely weigh more than a low power variable.
2 Prolly cost just as much as a low power variable.

Both of your downsides are the main thing I was worried about. I think I'd be fine out to 3 or 400 with it, and I like the ability to run the holo on its own. A variable can cut down on your field of view a bit especially for targets 100 and under.

The offset isn't a bad idea, but id probably run irons instead of a red dot. Keeps weight and costs down. Makes the 1-6 look like a more viable option. And it sort of opens up the posdibilty for the sig tango4 zince my main complaint was the reduced mag 1x but that was only a 1-4.

30-06, 308, 6.5 CM (2), 223
3 Remington 700s, 2 Savage (10,12), my favorite is the 30-06 it weighs 17 pounds and has a 30 inch hart barrel. They all will shoot .5 MOA or better. I just like a little variety when I go to the range.

Have you checked out the reviews by Supersetca? They've got a video on each of the scopes you mentioned. It helped me decide on the Burris XTR II 1-5. They usually run $700-800 but got one on sale for 425 through Midway. I think Burris has a 1-8x model out now too..

Razor. Hands down (from your list)

Look at the bushnell 1-6.5 x24 elite tactical BTR-2. (I run this one)

Or the SWFA 1-6x24 ffp. My buddy runs this one.

All the above options are excellent.

I picked the bushy cause the razor was just too heavy. I did not want to give up the weight on the scope. shooting off hand with a heavy scope makes it even more wobbly. I take every advantage I can get.

Doesnt that put you in open?

I run straight 1x. No need for offsets IMO. If they are close i juat look at the targets......i can hit uspsa targets out to 15 ish yards without looking at any sights.....juat pull up and look at the target.

FWIW I am comfortable runnjng out to 100 on 1x.....if they are 2MOA targeta or so inwill go to 1.5 at 100. Anymore just amplifies my wobble.

If i shot ipen and was running a 3-? Or 4-? Power optic i may run 45s.

17 oz

I run lighter profile barrels than most. So i save 7oz on the optic and 9-11 oz on the barrel.

So i pick up a free pound or so.

And I've read that the adjustments do not correlate to the reticle. Is this true? I ask because this scope is on my short list. How is daytime illumination? Reticle provide a good balance of close range speed and long(mid) range precision? It would survive a good bump?
