In regards to the search for contraband, it doesn’t once the person is searched, depending on circumstances. The car is clearly fair game. It’s not rocket science.

Just want to point out that it is not illegal for cops to point their guns at people during felony car stops. Period, end of story. I’ve done it many times. I even hit a few people with my gun before.

Your completely wrong on that. They were wrongly informed that a gun was present . They followed thier procedures to apprehend an armed suspect . They followed their dept. policy's .

The question is how should a police officer approach a car when a suspect of a minor crime is armed?

If someone presented to a cop credible information that you had a gun out in public, the only way to determine whether a crime had been committed would be to conducted a stop. Depending on the information given, that stop my include you exiting your car to be searched, the vehicle as well. You saying, “I didn’t do anything wrong” doesn’t end the investigation.
But I was hoping to discuss it more philosophically. How do you expect the determination to bemade whether a crime has been committed or not? That’s rarely an instant thing. Cops would never be able to intervene unless they witnessed the crime themselves.

I don't have the information of this particular case , but if you allow me to assume for demonstration , We could say the plate and make was given to the officers or the car fit the description of the suspects car . the officer would have probable cause to search.
