I carry with 147 grain self defense hollow point ammo. Is it bad to train with 115 grain FMJ ammo instead of 147 grain FMJ? Would the difference noticed be worth the price increase in 147 compared to 115?
After you confirm that your carry gun reliably cycles and accurately fires the carry ammo, I would guess the only concern would be training with a different perceived recoil and a likely different point of impact but the magnitude of those differences are uniquely dependant on the shooter and the specific firearm.I carry with 147 grain self defense hollow point ammo. What grain is your carry ammo? Not sure if I should stick with 147 grain or go to 124 grain and have my practice ammo 124 grain also. After you confirm that your carry gun reliably cycles and accurately fires the carry ammo, I would guess the only concern would be training with a different perceived recoil and a likely different point of impact but the magnitude of those differences are uniquely dependant on the shooter and the specific firearm.

For the average citizen protecting themselves or family, doesn't matter as your engagements distances will be well within 10 yards if you want to say out of jail. If your an officer, on tactical team and practicing engaging distant threats then it matters.
I have to think at self defense distances and situations the difference is not going to be noticeable.I carry with 147 grain self defense hollow point ammo. Any minor change in recoil is going to be undetectable in the massive difference the adrenaline wave will bring.

there is that 21 foot rule too .. the guy with a knife within 21 feet will get you most of the time .

Just look at the Bodega worker charged for defending himself with a knife.

No doubt it was only the public pressure and ridicule against this activist Manhattan District Attorney that caused him to reverse course.
The entire episode, including the ridiculous charges against Jose Alba, was fraught with racist undertones from the district attorney’s office.
