Sorry, but I have to disagree. Coyote are extremely destructive. They will decimate the population of rabbits, pheasants, and turkeys. They take a large chunk of the deer population especially fawns. If you happen to be a farmer with any livestock at all, you know that ducks, chickens, turkeys, bovine calves, equine foles, dogs, cats, and nearly every other small animal is subject to becoming prey to coyotes. In suburban settings, household pets are frequently targeted, and coyotes have been known to attack children. Not destructive ? I want you to say that as a child, pet, or livestock investment of yours is found dead.

Pets don't have to be left alone in your yard to be taken, I personally know a couple people who have had their little dogs taken in broad daylight while they were in the yard with their dogs. I damn near lost a couple of my little ones on 3 separate occasions. Had I not had them leashed close to me to do their business, they'd have been coyote dinner. I bring everything back that I kill, but there would be no hard feelings on my end if I left a few to return to the earth.

This is #10 of this season. Small female.
Chopped my 26" stainless varmint barrel down to 18"s , crowned and bead blasted it matte.
Loaded some rounds with 40 grn Vmax and sighted it in just before it got dark.
Dropped it mid step at 130 yards.

How well does the 20 cal do on the explosion factor. Does the 40gr vmaxs explode inside or upon exit?
When it comes to hitting woodchucks the majority of the time I get internal expansion with either no exit or a huge exit. I use 32gr Sierra Blitzkings. Everything Ive read says to use 35gr Berger HP's for fox and coyote because they seem to always internally expand and have no exit. Though Ive never loaded any up. Ive loaded 32gr sierra, 32gr Vmax and 32gr Noslers,,,,,,,my barrel doesnt like the 40gr. Its a Lilja 12 twist.
Your barrel still looks heavy but Im sure cutting it down from 26 to 18 helped considerably
Couple of weeks after purchasing my RPR I changed the 24in barrel to a 20in fluted BSF Carbon Fiber barrel,,,,made a huge difference
I use to go out sometime after 9pm and would rarely ever see one,,,,maybe like once a year but the next thing I say might be a coincidence. Forum member tells me to go out as soon as it gets dark, so I did. First time out I called in a yote, possibly 2. Didnt relax at all from all the adrenalin running through my body, took a shot and missed. Just like many of other times Ive had shots.
I need a better scope that will work for longer distances and I need to learn patients. Which I thought I was doing but apparently not.
I did order a new thermal yesterday though, so thats one step in the positive direction
Anyways I plan on sticking to the out at dusk hunts until my luck changes back to not seeing them

I use locator sounds first thing. I didnt use to but I do now. Use to use a rabbit call at first in case a fox was nearby, now I dont care if there is a fox nearby because I have had so many opportunities to shoot them and dont because I dont want to scare the coyotes.

Coyotes can be found any time, day or night. I've found that just after sundown and just before sunrise are the most productive for hunting them, but I believe that has more to do with them being hungry. They want a snack just before bed ( dawn ) and a quick and easy breakfast ( dusk ), if you will. I truly believe that their behavior has a direct correlation to weather, specifically the barometric pressure. I believe most wild animals are this way. Animals sense the drop in barometric pressure, signaling the coming of bad weather and make every attempt to feed as much as possible before the storm arrives. This is true with fish as well. I believe there are other external factors that drive their habits too. Human activity is huge. In areas where there is very little human activity, coyotes can be seen during the day much more easily. In areas where there is a great deal of human activity, coyotes wait until it has diminished. In farmland areas, that is shortly after sunset. In suburban areas, that would by much closer to midnight. I'm sure I could go on extensively, but I can't give away all my secrets....
As far as locate type calls, personally I rarely use them. I always start out my calling sequence with a mouse squeek or a kitten in distress played softly. The volume of your call should always start off low. Many hunters make the mistake of calling too loudly. A coyote knows how loud a rabbit can scream and if it's too loud they understand that it's not real. You may get them to investigate, but they will hang up at a safe distance. When beginning your set, remember that you don't know if they are 25 yards or 2500 yards or 25,000 yards away. Start calling quietly to interest the ones that may be close by. You can gradually increase your volume, but never exceed realistic volume of any call. For the few times I do try a locate call, I use a howler type mouth call. A couple barks with a drawn out fading howl gets attention without being too lengthy. You want to be able to hear a reply, not be calling at the same time.

This is the first 40 grain projo I've used in the 20 P.
I've been using the 34 grain nosler HP, as it was recommended for an 11 twist barrel and I was gifted 1,000.
The 40 Vmax blew the shoulder to pieces, turned it's insides into jelly and didn't exit, the yote just dropped.
I've never had those results with the 34 HP, especially when taking longer shot's, that's why I was looking into trying the 40 Vmax.
The barrel is .890"s at the muzzle now and weighs in at 9.5 lbs, decked out with thermal scope and a full magazine.
Lost a pound cutting the eight inches off.
Much easier to lug around now.
My barrel is a 12 twist. Everything Ive read says that a true 12 twist should shoot the 40gr bullets. Ive tried 39gr sierra but didnt put much effort into reloading for them and stuck with the 32's. I love my 204. Its a super fast accurate gun,,,,,,,at least its accurate when coyotes arent coming

Depends on what time of the season and how much they've been pressured by other hunters.
Mating season, coyote vocals.
Distress the rest of the season.
If other hunters are educating the coyote in your AO, you need to try bait piles and other calls to bring them in.
No baby animal distress call's during the winter, as they know there's no baby animals around in the winter.
If you hunt in field terrain and have a lot of yotes in the area that are pressured by night hunters, you can hunt during the day using a decoy.
Not all yotes fall for the same calls, try different calls and see what happens.
The last yote I got, hung up at 130 yards and sat down on a little bluff looking in my direction for over a half hour.
I could see it in the scope, but had no shot, as there were branches in the way.
I tried a lot of different calls to make it move into a clear area and it showed no interest in any of them.
I actually saw it yawn.
Finally it got tired of listening and decided to move on and the rest is history.
I called it in with male coyote howls, played in 5 second bursts every couple of minutes.
If you listen to solo coyote calling to each other, they don't call for 20 seconds at a time.
Listen to how their calling and mimic every aspect.
Challenge them when they call back and be prepared for a quick entrance, as their looking for a fight.

So I went to the same property tonight where I missed a coyote on the 13th.
I played a locator sound. Coyote Serenade.
The call ended and I sat there for a bit and listened, I heard nothing. Started scanning all around and just before I put the mono down I looked in the direction where I shot at the last coyote and sure enough one was coming in. I watched him and he ran up to the side of the pond that was between him and I. Then he ran back into the woods and I lost him for 5 mins or so.
I decided to turn on distressed cottontail and caught a glimpse of him running through the woods to go around the pond. He was running super fast and never slowed down. He popped out of the woods right in front of me at exactly 100 yards away. I had to bark at him to get him to stop, he was running right for my caller. He stopped, I didnt take my time and I shot and then shot at him a second time at roughly 125yds into the woods.
I dont know what to blame it on,,,Except for the Fact that I SUCK!!! 2nd fucking miss in 2 weeks.
I was there for a whole 20 plus mins.
Packed my shit and decided to head over to a friends house that has a bunch of coyotes behind his house.
As soon as I got to his house I opened the door of the truck and I could hear the neighbors (Adams Family) dogs barking up a storm. Mind you these are the same pack of dogs that came running out to attack my caller 3 weeks ago and when I tried to stop them I thought they were going to attack me
So anyways, got out of the truck but got back in the truck, then went and scored some pizza which Im chowing on right now.
I love coyote hunting. I hate shooting and missing,,,,which only seems to happen at night.
How do I justify buying another million dollar scope when I cant even hit one of the little bastards.

I rechecked zero the following day after the first miss. 4 rounds were shot at a 100yds, all hit inside a 5 inch circle. Wasn't marksman accuracy but what I would call thermal accuracy being that target was hard to see.
Maybe your range was incorrect?
I have found that making a 10" plus crosshair with aluminum Foil tape on paper targets works really good for zeroing thermal.
I used HVAC foil tape on a cardboard box. My problem is more my scope, being that the power starts out at 1.6 and is a grainy blob if increased

I'm using a clip on behind 3.5-24 which is also not ideal but the 640res helps.
I would think the 3.5 would help too,,,,I'm sure if you increased one time it's not so bad till you go further

Full features of the display,,,like what its set on, battery indicator and stuff?
Do they recommend what power scope to attach it to?
Or recommend you to attach it to a 2nd focal plane?
Luckily the resolution of the thermal is not distorted by the good glass & parallax adjust. I also have the option of using the clip ons reticle to co witness my day scope reticle. The combo works for my short range (0-200yds) application.
I would assume if the thermal doesnt distort, when power is increased, that you should be easily able to use it out to 500yds plus with a 24 power scope? Not that you would but just trying to figure out how a clip-on works.
Distortion is an issue especially with lower resolution units. You have to be aware that your day scope is focusing on a screen an inch or so away. The more the magnification, the fewer pixels you are seeing.
