Ruger Amercian Ranch, now with AR15 mags!!!

So they finally did it. Ruger wised up and made a model of the American ranch that takes AR mags. A bolt action "scout" type gun that takes AR mags is something I've wanted for a while now. There are a few options out there, including an actual "scout" gun by Ruger in 5.56, but it's expensive and I like the looks/idea of the American line. The only thing I wish they had/would do is to add iron sights. However, there may be a thread on option for a front sight I could rig. I'm going to have to find a way to sneak this into the safe and ease the GF into knowing about it's existence. She likes guns, but she says (and she is very right) we really should be saving for getting out of NY. I caught a lot of flak for the 1873 Cattleman (so worth it), so this might put it over the edge, lol. I'm excited about this. I hope Ruger sells a lot of them!

Yes, my ARES SCR came with a 5rd'er and I picked up 2 more for coyote hunting.

That's not a Scout per say you would need to put a scout rail on it and a Scout LER c
scope some iron sights.
I bought the Mossberg 308 scout it came with a Vortex Crossfire 2x7 scout scope the whole package cost me 700 out the door it take Pmags.

mags for the mini 14 or 30 are like 45 bucks a pop on any size .. off brands have issues for some reason .. grrrrr

It would be cool if the mini14 used AR mags. Or if they managed some kind of conversion kit that looked and worked well. It would detach from the concept though, in that the mini14/30 are scaled down copies of the M14 which didn't take magazines that worked like an AR's. They rocked in like an AK

I've looked hard at the Mossbergs and I like them. I've seen that they can sometimes have issues feeding certain mags though. I guess there has been a lot of play in the magazine causing the problems. One fix I saw was to put a rubber stopper behind the mag to snug it in place and keep it from moving too much. I like the whole "flex" system they have also. I am really starting to like the chassis with pistol grips a lot. As a left handed shooter, having the pistol grip allows for me to use my right hand to actuate the bolt without it hitting my left hand holding the gun. Otherwise I'd have to adjust my grip on the gun when moving the bolt or come over the top awkwardly with my left hand to open and close the bolt.

Any idea how this compares to a Mossberg MVP?
I like the concept of a 5.56 AR mag'd rifle for SHTF and had a MVP but the action was not very smooth.

I used to have a Ruger American Rifle Predator version in .308 with the 18" barrel & threaded muzzle and loved it except for the factory synthetic stock, which had too much flex towards the front half for my taste. It would've made for a great bolt action truck gun for people who live in rural or farm settings that have coyote & fox problems. I ended up selling it, and if there where other options besides Boyds replacement stocks I'd most likely still have mine. Granted, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with wood stocks, I'm one of the guys who prefer synthetic stocks or fiberglass stocks like those offered by H-S Precision. I do have to admit I do find certain wood / walnut stocks on certain rifles make them look sharp.

I've worked on a couple for friends 223s and on my 308 the mag being sloppy I think has been fixed in the new production run of the 223s. The issue with the 308 is the mag springs are way too strong and put so much pressure on the bolt it is hartld to cycle a mag with more then 3 rounds in it so much so the bottom of the bolt is gold coated with brass it grinds off the next round. That was a simple fix by cutting off some loops off the springs. This also help the 223 models as well.

There are a bunch of videos on bedding the Ruger stock and glueing a rod in the forend to stiffen it up.

I saw that! Looks like an awesome stock, but it doesn't appear to work with the AR mag version. Expensive too.

Yeah just looked it over again it appears to use AI 308 mags. I wonder if they are working on a 223 stock or floor plate that would except a Pmag.

So, just an update. I ended up ordering the new Ruger Ranch AR mag version last week. I tried finding it at one of my local dealers since it's been out for a few months but none had it or could readily get it. I ended up getting it off of Brownell's who as it were, has my main dealer listed as a preferred dealer. That makes the whole thing easier since they have his ffl already. It shipped today and will hopefully be here by the weekend. I also ordered a Bushnell AR optics 1-4 scope for it as well. I also am thinking about doing a mod on it to make it more left handed friendly. I'll post pics once I get it home and sneak it passed the GF, lol.

Well, I brought it home! I'm pressed for time today so I was only able to snap a quick pic before locking them in the safe.
Oh yeah, and an old Remington 514 followed me home from picking up the American Ranch rifle, lol. I'll post more picks later this weekend.

So here is something odd. I was looking up Ruger American serial numbers/date of manufacture and what I found puts the rifle I just bought, a variant Ruger just put out this year, as being manufactured between 2012 and 2013. HUH???? Did Ruger have receivers laying around from back then that they are using in this latest variant of the ranch rifle?

I'd say they had barreled Actoin that they had run off and did need waiting for a rush on 223 rifles but it never happen thanks to the MVP and use of ar mags.
Ruger is finely catching on no one want the pay 50 buck for a magizine.
