Ruger PC Carbine

Yesterday I ventured to the LGS to pick up my parts order, what came home was my order and a new Ruger PC Carbine and 500 rounds of 9 mm ammo. This is the first centerfired firearm I’ve ever bought, scads of 22LR based rifles, no pistols, and the first one I’ve fired in about 40 yrs.

The Ruger PC Carbine (PCC), in an over simplified way, is a 9 mm version of the takedown Ruger 10/22. I live in NYS, so no pistol grip, no folding or collapsable stock, no threaded barrel, as we are dealing with a semi-auto, also no mags over 10 rounds, so a basic rifle. It is switchable to use either Ruger mags or Glock mags, weighs roughly 7# with a 3.5# trigger pull. It has a picatinney rail on the receiver and comes with iron sights, mounted on the barrel.

I took it to the range this morning fighting snow, cold and a blowing wind. I hung a target at 50 feet at the outdoor range, at 9:08 I shot, 30 round, using the iron sights into a 4” circle. All in all I was happy. Obviously more recoil than a 22LR, but not too much for multiple surgically repaired shoulder.

I understand that, as I have no Glocks and have 2 of the Ruger mags given to me, Ruger is the way I’m going.

Being able to switch is a great feature

Mine came well factory oiled. Most oil I've had to clean from a new firearm in awhile. Funny first impression. The takedown feature is pretty neat. A nice plus for cleaning.

They are nice little carbines. Fun and accurate. I have the 40 caliber version and the wife has the 9mm version

Consider mounting it in the Magpul Backpacker stock. I just did it to mine. Makes for a really nice compact package (and now I have a twin for my 10/22 version).

Took my son who shot mine the other day for its maiden outing. Heavier than my Tacsol 23 takedown but fun. Going to get the Backpacker stock soon. Fun gun.

I got one when they first came out! Have shot it in what we were calling AR tactical matches at my Club (Now called Americas Rifle Challenge) with a red-dot out to 60 yards was tuff to beat, after that the guys with AR's took over. If you do want to get more magazine I've never had a hiccup with Magpul P-mags and you can catch them on sale sometimes for around &12.00.

Is this a bolt in switch or is this a major modification to get this to fit

No worries.....my post was a bit ambiguous.

As you have probably discovered, Magpul makes backpacker stocks specifically for both the PPC and the 10/22. I love the way they store as a single self contained package when taken down. Aside from the storage for spare mags and/or ammo under the cheek riser, there is also a small storage compartment under the grip. As I tend to be "over prepared" (as my kids say half-jokingly) I usually have an allen wrench to take the action off the stock and a Gerber Dime stashed in there.

I found the the Magpul PC backpacker takedown stock, through a distributor, hopefully here by the weekend.

I had bought some cheap 124 gr FMJ ammo from Eastern Europe, based on cheap brass ammo criteria, enough to get started, but not huge amounts, now the quest for decent ammo starts, looking on the web, I’ve found it ranging from $.28/round to $1.75/round. Multiple bullet weights, casing choices, bullet designs and powder charges, choices, choices, choices. This is a lot more complicated than buying a box of mini-mags.

I considered buying one, I just have a hard time justifying the purchase to myself. Outside of a fun range toy I can't see where I'd use it instead of an AR. That's probably just me being overly practical though. As Phauxtoe said, maybe I'd go for it if I didn't want an AK or AR. Either way, have fun with it!

I put mine in a Magpul backpacker stock. I’ve been waiting 2+ years since it was announced at SHOT and has been delayed again and again. The stock comes with a second higher comb height piece that gives a perfect cheekweld with a low mounted red dot. I bought and installed a sig romeo because it was cheap and has a shake and wake and auto sleep function and I have a perfectly repeatable mount with it.

Personally, my biggest issue with most NY legal rifles (mini 14, m1a, pc9, saiga sporter) has always been that using a red dot requires a chin weld, at least for me. Maybe the only rifle, besides thordsen or mag locked ARs, that you can get a regular cheekweld on is the kel tec rdb c, which has been reliable for me but I don’t trust as much as a ruger. Because of this I run irons on all my rifle, with the exception of the PC9.

I mounted a light to the side mlok slot on the magpul stock and honestly it’s the perfect little setup, minus the inherent high weight of the PC9. The ability to carry an additional magazine on the rifle by using the magpul stock’s storage compartment is great. It‘s possibly my favorite NY setup, and definitely a consideration if you’re looking for a home defense oriented rifle in 9 or 40 where weight is less important.

My Ruger PC9 came with a Horrible Trigger, so much so that I had to upgrade the trigger group assy to a Volquartsen trigger...
Now it is as good as any of my AR's...

As I don’t own any pistols and have about 8 of the SR9 mags, I left with the Ruger mag insert.

Around lunch time I went to the outdoor, pistol/rifle range.

A little usual occurrence, no Rimfires, I shot the Ruger PC Carbine, using the Ruger sights

I shot Igman (Bosnia) 124gr FMJ and Dogwood (USA) 115gr FMJ

I shot a box of each ammo, without a single issue

Sun was out, 60* with a slight breeze

I shot targets at 35 yds, I had a great time

I put a low mount CT red dot on mine and was not pleased with it interfering with the rear sight. I tried the high mount and that doesn't work either. I prefer a co-witness setup, but is there a red dot that makes this possible? I am thinking of getting the Backpacker stock once I stop impulse buying ammo.

Probably not an absolute witness. I tried a TRS-25 which is probably about as low as you can get a normal red dot (even lower than my Sig Romeo) without going to micro pistol red dots. Maybe you could get a cowitness, but those micro red dots are tiny and I think you’d be better served with a full size red dot. I’m assuming you’re talking about absolute witness; 1/3rd might be easier. I think there are some special high mounts with cutout channels for viewing irons under your RDS but your weld would be really high. I would take a look at vortex venom (very small), the Burris fastfire series, etc.

I wish I could offer more help but I don’t cowitness anymore unless I have a regular setup with a RDS and flip up backup sights a la an AR 15. It’s too difficult to setup a convenient cowitness on many “traditional” rifles and shotguns. The tech and durability of RDS has come a long way so I’m not worried about redundancy.

You could go 45 degree scope mount or open sights??

I ended up installing the cheap CT red dot it is close. Just ordered the Backpacker stock and will see if the high cheek rest may make it possible to run the red dot with the AR mount. Not really a fan of 45 degree sights.
