Russia or the Ukraine? Which side do you support?

I’m a bit unimpressed with Russia’s invasion, I don’t agree with it and the loss of life on both sides, but you would think a superpower of Russia’s stature would have been more decisive, professIonal and dominating by now. Pie in the sky but I hope the Russians deal with anti war sentiment at home and hope the Russia troops question what they are doing there. God bless the Ukrainian civilians.

I have always thought Russia’s military was big and old, and would get utterly wrecked in a direct fight with a modern military. Based on how things are going for them I am thoroughly convinced of it. They wouldn’t have a hope in hell against the USA, let alone the rest of nato.

Not complete picture. The US provides great pay and benefits to its troops compared to all of those countries. The US has many fronts to defend its interests. Those other countries have only one or two areas of the world to defend.
But Russia is not the juggernaut that it tries to portray. China is our main threat to our interests in the world.

I dunno about THE Ukraine, but I support Ukraine.

Putin is a backwards-thinking dictator. He has a nominal democracy supporting him, but we know how false that is.

I can see why he thinks the way he does, but on the same token, he’s stuck in his East Germany KGB days to do so.

Ukraine is only a threat to Putin, not to Russia, insofar as it’s a peaceful, but western-looking country with what was looking to become a better democracy. Putin can’t have that kind of “nonsense” on its border.

The pretexts are hilarious. Ukraine wasn’t even a NATO candidate, yet not eliminating it as a candidate was a breaking point for Putin. The “breakaway” provinces? Carries a bit more weight, but it was never his job to declare them independent, let alone to invade all of Ukraine.

That said, it does smack of a lot of what we have done over the last century plus. We somehow have Puerto Rico and Guam, and of course we know about our ill-fated ventures since then from Vietnam to Iraq and many places besides...scroll back in our history and you see manifest destiny, and Europe’s colonial past...it’s not just recent treatment of Russia which has given Putin a sense of having a green light to to whatever he wants. The difference is that it’s 2022, and we tend to realize that kind of thing is wrong, unless you’re Putin or Xi Zinping or whatever Kim is in power in North Korea.

The bright side is that Ukraine seems to have stood up well and fought valiantly enough to frustrate their advances. Ukraine will lose, but they have bought a lot of all-too-valuable time, and that’s a credit to her people and her armed forces.

So what happens when arms shipments from NATO to Ukraine get blown up on NATO soil or on NATO ships?

Supplying arms to either side at this point is taking sides and is an act of war, so is supplying guerrilla/insurgent groups.

But it boils down to the fact that Russia invaded a sovereign country because they didn't want them to make an alliance with the West.

While I understand it's in Russia's interest not to allow NATO on their doorstep it doesn't give them the right to start killing innocent people.
