The AR is a totally different thing right? You can get very good accuracy sub moa but in long range loads even with
24 barrels you will loose an average of 200fps with many popular rounds that also affects the standard deviation.
So for long range, the bolt is way more consistent. For rapid fire the AR is more versatile.
the Bolt also gives access to cartridges not possible with the AR some in more heavy and expensive 308 AR type of
platform.

again, you can get the same results out of an AR15 (i realize you need an AR308 to shoot 6.5 creed)....with the added bonus it is an auto loader......

I built a few of those. Building an AR in 308 costs about the same as building a bolt gun. I happen to like to have all modern actions available. I am an equal opportunity gun enthusiast. The nicest thing for me about bolt guns is lower round consumption with the same amount of range time.

Oh, I get you can do both with the AR, but it's also a matter of just having more guns too. Why have 1 gun when I can have 2?

All it takes is a scope change at minimum to make an AR a more accurate long shooter, and I know that's a simplified view of it.

Also, a 308 AR and a 308 rifle are definitely on opposite ends of cost (to me). Once I finish my 223 upper, I could build a 308 upper as well.

As for the other rifles shown, I will probably get into those once I have a few more under my belt and have shot these cheaper guns for a while.

Like I said I am a 700 guy, I do own savage, mossberg and Marlin as well as bolt action ARs but, I love the 700. I am also a GMC truck guy, I have had other brands, cars and Sports cars however, in the end I am a GMC truck guy.


I think you are on the right track with Savage and if you go that route you will be happy.

I built a few of those. Building an AR in 308 costs about the same as building a bolt gun. .

Not for me. I can build a good ar308 with optic for $2.5-3k

For my bolt guy it starts at $ 5k.....and i dont even get that stupid expensive chassis i want..... those chassis are like another 2-3k!?!?!?!! Wtf?

I have a savage 11 in .223 and hitting the center of a clay at 100 yrds .. also got the savage xp in .270 and when i don't flinch will do the same.
love shooting both of them .. and if i had the funds lots of options for each ..

I'm hoping this spring/summer i can get to the farm and try both out to 300 yrds and see how i do

say what you will about Dicks Sporting Goods... but they run some very good sales on the Remington 700 ADL Varmint and Savage 11VT rifles.... I own both models and they are incredible heavy barrel rigs. With handloads, both were subMOA rifles.

Wait for a sale/rebate combo and you can get out the door for $400 or less

Yes they are good donors to start a project. The stocks have to go into the trash right away though.
Of all the Tupperware stocks the ADL are the worse and cannot be used.
The 223 has a 1:9 twist that is not good for the best match loads.
308w chambers are all over the place in terms of tolerances so accuracy is not as consistent as a savage.
Some are 2 thousands larger up to 1.6355 from the datum.
I have measured all these things with gauges and micrometers.
So accuracy is a hit and miss situation. All this is well documented in the old forum and other forums.

Other than that, they are great value for building a rifle. Take everything off, sell what you can and then build
because the action alone and bolt is around $450 or so.

After blue printing, timing the bolt, truing, etc... for consistent accuracy you are looking at $1200 for a budget
rifle with certain accuracy. After those builds wiht a good quality stock and glass they become one of the best
rifles on the planet.

There is a reason there is a dicks special model.

In the Remington 700 the best value right now is the Bergara B14 that for over $600 has everything one
can find in actions worth 2 or 3 times that much.

I am not saying one cannot get good groups with one of these ADLs out of the box but repeatable accuracy
will not be possible.

I would not get the savage II for $400 and instead a legendary savage 11/10 action for $430-$440 that comes with the
nikon scope in some XP models.
just because of the savage 10 you have huge aftermarket support for everything.
The nice thing about the axis is still shares the same barrels and bolt heads but the savage 10 packages are just
about the best out of the box deals one can get for a budget rifle on an action that is one of the most popular
actions in the world.

I agree, where can I get a model 10 for $430-440? Gotta be wood, I can't deal with plastic.

Get a nice wood stock later. Sell the plastic one then.
In the case of the FCP in gunbroker is not a plastic. It is an aluminum bedded polymer stock that alone costs up to $200 but savage
has a contract with HS precission so they can give that for a great price in some models.
I wouldn't trade all the other benefits for wood only. The savage 10/11 has so many aftermarket
and beautiful wood upgrades.
I think for the classic savage action you ahve to go to $550 but you also get a Savage 10 vs. 11 action.
they are the same actions but the 10 has an adjustable trigger all the way down to 1.5lbs.
You also get the Nikon scope.

So just turning this into a running thread at this point. No real update. Went to F&S, Dick's, and Gander yesterday. Went to Gander thinking I might luck out and find a used decent 308, but no such luck. On to the other two stores, where I at least got to hold both the Savage and the Ruger. Didn't even bother looking at the Remington. Long story short, the sales only existed for Christmas, so I have to wait again. Instead of instant savings, the Savage was $380 with a $50 mail in rebate, and the Ruger had gone back up to $400, and the Remington sat at $350. Dude at Dick's told me to wait, since he knows there will be a sale again, I just need to be patient.

Since I'm back to waiting, I might as well keep saving too. Depending on when the sale hits, I might have enough to consider the Axis XP II or maaaaybe a Mossberg Patriot. We'll see what happens.

So I just got a flyer from F&S today, and that Axis XP is on sale for 299 PLUS a $50 mail in rebate. Even though I've been looking at deals on Buds, I think this is too good to pass up for the money. That $50 back is going right into a better scope, ammo, and a bipod.
