In a TEOTWAKI situation it’s better to send the elderly off on an ice flow as the Inuits do.
In the comments it seems older people believe ALL younger people would be worthless.
One says that they dont know ANY people in their 20s that can grow food or slaughter animals.
They must be city folk.
In my opinion the writer is spot on as far as the elderly will have it TOUGH.
Many say they will shelter in place because they cant walk. Well, chances are you will be dead in 3 months, even with food.
No electricity, no running water and millions of desperate people will make life severely difficult for 25 year old survival experts, let alone 85 year old diabetics with heart disease and a walker.
Just saying.

as I get older, my brain still thinks Im 30. My body though is more like a 75-year-old. I have come to the conclusion that, if the SHTF, it will depend on where Im at when the event happens. In short, traveling to a second location may be a big problem.
The good news is, if Im at either location, as long as I don't have to travel, I should be ok.

Many folks take meds these days . ... Not just old folks ... Many folks out of shape and overweight. One of the big take points from this article ... Nursing homes could very well be a death trap if one leaves their love ones in it. Nurses aids make very little money . IF their paycheck vanished ...How many dutifully would show up to work . ... On the other hand . Very few of us could get the medications that most elderly would need if everything went to hell . .. Big die off would be coming ...

I think the article is full of shit. Medications will be the biggest issue and it's not an age dependent issue anymore. Medications shouldn't be an issue, since most can be ordered on-line. We've stocked needed meds, enough for multiple years. And there are natural equivalents for many meds.
My impression of the article is that old folks should just turn over in their beds and die. I guess it depends upon the individual and their genetic stock and how much internal stamina they have. My Dad is 88 and still hikes and gets around well. I'm in my 60's and just take a few OTC meds, and I could fore go those if necessary. I could lose some weight, but I still hike and do everything that I've always done. Older folks are a wealth information. In our case, in the event of an emergency, our family will be at our BOL, and having family and close friends are an important factor in long term survival. That's part of the problem in modern American society, is the lack of family cohesiveness. I was always taught to respect elders and to care for them, so that belief has been passed down to the next generation.

I read this article focus towards octogenarians where genetics and lifestyle choices take inevitable heavy tolls. Much of the 55 to 70 year old population I know are better prepared, better trained, better supplied, healthier and more experienced in the skills that will be needed to survive than much of the 20 to 35 year old population who have been exposed to drastically different life experiences. I seriously and sadly believe most under 35 will not survive a nasty prolonged shtf event without help from those who know how to survive and may not be at much if a statistical advantage in spite of their youth.

Im praying Im at my BOL if the SHTF, Im good either way, but Im safer at my BOL. here at home, I'll be on high alert at all times, at mt BOL i can see anyone coming at me for a couple miles away
There is know way to know who will live in die in a major shtf event, survival is about willpower, the will to survive no matter what. A young, fit, prepared 25 year old may lose themselve to despair and wither away while a little 80 year lady may be hellbound determined to eke out every extra minute of life she can muster. Look at the survivors and casualties of past calamities, the only universal thing in common amongst survivors is the will to survive. Whatever needs a person may have, there will be ways to provide for them. Even if one has to do things they are not proud of to do it, and this is often the case.
Yes and no Pod, An 85 year old that needs an electric cart is NOT going to survive. A person that has never provided for himself is not all of a sudden going to be able to fend for themselves.
There will be exceptions to everything, but overall, most of us can guess who and who would not survive.
Could be that the 85 year old finds he is able to grimace through the pain of walking for a time. The person that has never provided fo themself may find the nerve and stomach to do what they never thought they would be willing to do.

I'm simply saying that just because somone is old or poor or even a millennial snowflake it doesn't mean they will die.
You ever watch those Seconds from Disaster things? In that horrible tenerife 747 collision disaster there was a guy that ran through flames while soaked in jet fuel, was set ablaze then jumped to the ground, suffering compound fractures in his legs, rolled around until the flames engulfing his body went out and got up and ran to safety. While naked and covered in third degree burns and on broken freaking legs.
Sometimes the reaper will not be denied but the will of a survivor can be a miraculous thing indeed.

But on the flip side of the life cycle are children. I bet many of the younger to mid aged members here have kids.
Having kids (especially younger children) will present their own set of challenges in SHTF

That is probably my biggest challenge. I am a 57 year old non smoker, not overweight and in reasonably good health for a man my age, like a 40 year old. I have made many preparations as I have seen a lot of this coming for years. My problem is asthma, and supplying enough long term med supplies to control if. I have had to learn to perform physical activities at a controlled pace.
