So you're saying it only took lawmakers 30 years to realize that the AR was being sold to "civilians" and finally have a problem with it..
So for 30 years, people were buying ARs, and not shooting up the place.
But then, in the 1990s, some lawmakers decided they knew better what people should and should not have, and created a drastic infringement on our Constitutionally protected Rights with their erroneous "assault weapon" ban. "Assault weapons" being defined by whatever they wanted to use to start the path to total disarmament.
Then a Republican held Congress and Senate (um.. isn't the Senate half of "Congress"? You missed the other half) decided to end this egregious infringement on American's Rights and NOTHING HAPPENED.
Only recently, when a certain portion of the body politic decided it would be good traction to demonize modern sporting rifles have these mass shootings started occurring with greater frequency, and utilizing a firearm that had otherwise been practically ignored for illegal purposes.
so I submit that it is not the fact that an AR resembles something carried by the military (but otherwise functions completely different), nor that it is or is not more prolific in recent times, but, rather, something has changed in the American society. Whether you choose to believe conspiracy or something else.

"Military assault style" is a fabricated term. It came into being as a way of demonizing a certain type of firearm in an attempt to open the door to infringements on the Second Amendment, confiscations, and bans.
And "high capacity magazine" is another such fabricated term. Since it is not clearly defined, it is obviously a way to sway the narrative in an attempt to further disarm law-abiding Americans.

What you call "high capacity" is really the standard size that were sold throughout America for decades, before people like you got butthurt and wanted to make everyone a victim.

The Wire is a great series, all 5 years. A lot of excellent black actors launched careers from The Wire (Jamie Hector for example). I've watched the series at least 3 times.

A collaboration between an ex-police beat reporter and a cop. Shows the true "Bal'more". One of the guys was involved in Homicide: Life on the Street, another great series IMHO.

Don't let the first few episodes stop you, Mrs.prambo almost quit watching, but by episode 5 of the first season she was hooked.
