The gunman was a total wuss. A real medical doctor would have used a personal flame thrower and made a suit of armor out of wrought iron cooking pans.

I work in a large NYC hospital. There is no serious protection from criminals inside the building. There are no metal detectors. There are simply "security officers" that assure that everyone entering the building has a pass (which is acquired just by showing some kind of ID).

As I've said to many, if a criminal intent on doing evil makes it past the front doors and gets to the upper floors, it will take a fair amount of time before real law enforcement can respond.

Since the hospital is in NYC, the bad guy can rest assured that they will not face any concealed carriers...especially since the institution is a teaching center and thus a "school" in New York.

If they put armed national guardsmen and police SWAT teams in every hospital, at every fuel depot, at every school, in every mall, at large gas stations, or anywhere else that 25 or more people are gathered; then there will need to be 50 million more national guardsmen and cops and our taxes in USA will go from 35% to 95%. The problem is they don't put enough hard core porn on free television 24x7x365. Nobody goes postal from watching porn. Or at least not WHILE watching porn. Amirite?

There are shooting in the city almost on a daily basis if not daily and so what. I have not seen prices rise because of that. Maybe they should ban lab coats, it was reported that is where the doctor had the rifle concealed before pulling it out and shooting multiple hospital employees.
