Being a cop isnt easy. It's a hard demanding job. One of which in order to do it you need to have some honest conversations with yourself on the night patrol when it's dark and lonely and quiet, what you are and are not prepared to do given "x situation" occurs. Being mentally prepared that one day you could be in this situation and you better be prepared to be the first one in through the door to save kids should be a pre requisite for wearing the badge. Anything less than that is unacceptable.
Yes it's dangerous. Yes you're putting yourself in danger. It's your job. You chose to do it and you signed up. You want all the benefits and perks and power when shit is easy but on the worst case scenario you cower.
It's no different than willfully joining the military. You know the risks and choose to accept them.
This is about the only PD that I'm completely in favor of immediately defunding and disbanding. They should all lose their jobs and benefits immediately. They utterly failed their community and at their duties.

Unfortunately that isn't going happen to any PD. Police departments and their officers are under no legal obligation to put their life in danger for anyone. Their weapons are for personal safety which may be used to protect others. SCOTUS ruled on this already. Maybe there can be some compensation gained from the town but honestly the area looks depressed and impoverished.
I hope this event doesn't fade away. A real conversation needs to take place concerning these soft targets, mental illness and the mental conditioning of young minds by our society today.
This event highlights the truth in exactly what can be expected of your local PD in these complex situations. Sure, there are individuals who will go against department policy and do something we might consider heroic but we shouldn't expect it. Unfortunately not one hero was in Uvalde that day for the first 77 minutes.
The FBI has done extensive research of these situations and concluded that time is the enemy. Officers on the scene should act and be provided the necessary tools to do so. I don't want to piss all over LEO's here. Clearly Uvalde didn't have the resources for responding officers. Unless I missed something in that video, I didn't see any breaching gear, breaching weapons, appropriate level IV armor in which to gain access into a room swiftly in that first group of officers. Personally, from what I seen of their actions in the hallway, I have no confidence that they knew how or that they would have initiated entry anyway.
As for the local tac team, well, they are drawing from a very small pool of candidates. In fact its probably nepotism that feeds the team. Their response once on scene was dismal, disorganized, lacked urgency and had no leadership. I'm sure that morning they went to work with the confidence of SEAL team six but acted like an air-soft team when the call came.
Of course all could have been avoided if the gun man was engaged outside the school where he was observed for several minutes by police. 100 yard shot or less at most.
Another thing that bothers me but I have no answer is where the hell did this poverty stricken kid get the money for that gear?
Anyway, we all know the answer to these shootings isn't a SWAT team or officers acting like their on the Secret Service presidential detail expecting to sacrifice their lives. The answer is in removing gun free zone designations from schools. Nothing more. No need to posts guards, have uniformed officers...ect. The mystery alone of who is armed will be enough. Just like Air Marshals.
