The problem with that dataset is that they are conflating things that are most certainly not remotely like what we are discussing here.
Nobody is suggesting that armed teachers are going to dissuade gang bangers from shooting each other in the parking lot at midnight.
I think we can all agree that is not even remotely in the same category as the sort of crime we are discussing here.
So, no, they won't make a dent in the dataset, but frankly we don't care about that whole dataset.
They will drastically drop what we can call "real" school shootings. If we are honest about what they are and don't try to artificially inflate the number of them to secure funding or push a narrative.
For sake of argument, let's agree that we only care about people getting shot in school, or possibly a combination where the shooter is shooting outside and then moves inside of the school (like just happened in Texas) or where the shooter started inside and transitioned to shootings outside. Let's also filter out events that happened outside of school hours/days (ie. let's only look at things that occurred during school hours). For this discussion we can agree "school shootings" are not the same thing as a gang shooting at night in a school parking lot. It's easy to filter the data based on those parameters.
All of my points still hold and the general patterns are the same. Namely:
- Handguns are used way more often.
- Rifles are used less often, and when used they on average cause a lot more carnage.
- The above note that shootings where a rifle is used causes higher visibility regarding rifles, fair or not.
- Most shootings have 0 or 1 person shot.
I still doubt armed teachers or guards would prevent much of this. Most of the time 1 person is shot and it's targeted. The person would just do those shootings with their handgun when a teacher wasn't around. As before in school shootings where semiautomatic rifle is used, I'm skeptical of armed teachers or guards ability to deter an attacker armed with a rifle since it provides such a huge advantage over someone armed with a handgun.
Data file attached as a zip like before.
1+ people actually shot:
