I've participated in my district on a parent outreach on how to make school safer and more secure earlier this year after a kid was caught with a gun on school property (it didn't make the news)

It gets complicated very quickly and most of the measures are just feel good window dressing that will do nothing from actually stopping a semi intelligent person from planning and committing these atrocities.

Do we want our schools to feel like a prison?

Are we OK with more than quadrupling the time it takes to have kids enter schools through controlled entry metal detectors every day in all weather conditions and further messing up bus schedules and times to transport students. (The kids are still vulnerable lined up outside). Hardening schools cost major $ and people aren't going to think it's great when school taxes go up 50%. They will complain about that. Politicians will argue where state and federal money get spent they still have their pet projects and pork and money laundering to look after

It costs well into 6 figures to hire 1 single sworn police department officer as a school resource officer. Apparently the officers get to bid on the role and usually the high seniority guys take it who are making a lot of money and all their associated costs. You can hire more hall monitors for much cheaper but their capabilities are limited other than preventing fights and trying to identify problem kids or getting a pulse on the school.

Allowing teachers and staff who choose to be armed and trained is all well and good but most teachers likely are not wanting that responsibility and or have the abilities to effectively carry out those duties. And just wait until one of them does something irresponsible like drop their gun in class or walks away from their desk and little Timmy finds their pistol in a purse or desk. It's going to happen. Again it's pros and cons.


Short of turning school into an airport/prison there isn't much you can do that doesn't have major drawback. I quite frankly don't know what the answer should be but it needs to be thorough and comprehensive. We need to be treating the disease not the symptoms and it needs to be layered.

We need to eliminate the causes of what sets people on the path of thinking this is an acceptable idea.
We need to identify those types of people and intervene
We need to reduce and mitigate their ability to carry out their actions
We need to protect children and schools
If all those preventive proactive measures fail there needs to be better solution to immediately stop kinetic actions and hard protect students while in schools.

Let's talk about educators responsibility outside promoting alternative lifestyle agendas! And lastly, be truthful, and remove any and all so called "gun free" zones that create the atmosphere of vulnerability to law abiding citizens, and opportunity to those who would break the highest law!

Stop villifying those you want to divert attention to for political gain! Maybe invite them to the table instead. Centrist politics is dead... My wife asked me this morning before she left for work... Why do we need ASSAULT RIFLES? Lol... She knows I'm an ardent 2A supporter! I began the entire education program of what and where ASSAULT came from, etc. And explained how there's 150,000,000 people who own guns who don't go around shooting up places and people. But I am left to wonder, especially since the last Assault Weapons Ban had no effect... What's different this time? Why has the frequency of these events increased? What societal forces effectuate their being? And of course why... Why a school? Innocents... Can't fight back... Etc.

Well, the root cause is mental health but the simple fact is that after adjusting for population size the mass shootings in the USA are much higher than in other western nations. You can debate what the appropriate resolution is but in no other western nation can young men (the primary instigator of these events) so easily get semi automatic rifles, which are generally the gun used in the most egregious events.

I don’t know what data you would look at but I wonder how we compare to other developed countries as far as mental health. Rates of mental illness, resources available, treatment, length of treatment, criteria identifying someone as mentally ill. We already know the mental health system in this country doesn’t document or report well. The shootings, drugs, homelessness, violent crimes are often a mental health issue disguised as something else. Something people are more comfortable blaming.

The security should have several aspects - alarm systems, secure doors, bullet proof glass, armed personnel, tazers in the classroom, guards, whatever we can do to protect the children
