I thought at 25 yards, it POI should be low, as the bullet is still rising that early in its trajectory.

So I definitely need to take this out to 100 and see where it hits before I do anything. If I'm punching bulls at 25, it would actually be different at 100.
Also, based on these calculations, at 200 if I wanted bulls, I would technically either hold 3.9" high or click up approximately 4 clicks?

Err, screw that. 2 clicks at 200 for 4" of adjustment, right? 1 moa at 200 is 2" I think.
It depends on the scope. If you have one the is 1/4" @ 100yds then one click at 200 yds equals 1/2". Therefor for 4 inches at 200 you would need 8 clicks.
Also if you get a milldot scope and don't want to do math there's this thing to help you out.

Right now your scope is way too high for 100 yards, to get it to zero at 25 yards with a 1/4" adjustment you will need to go down 28 clicks then to go to 3/4 inch low at 25 you will need to go down another 12 clicks. that should put you on the X ring at 100. if you have a 1/8" adjustment double those numbers.Ah yes, that's what I was thinking! with a 100 yard zero my 1/8 " adjustment scopes on my 308s 12 clicks up puts me on the bull at 200, 32 up puts me on the bull at 300 and 59 up puts me on the bull at 400. Those are totals from zero.
If your scope is a 1/4 adjustment will be half of that and should put you in the ball park

Thanks @dsdmmat That's kinda what I was wondering. Some were saying bullet is still rising at 25, some were saying wait and see at 100 before too many adjustments. At almost 2" high at 25, I'd like to think that's still a bit high, so I should probably at least play with it a bit. Plus, it'll give me a chance to really work on/practice the adjustments.
This is all great practice for when I get my new scope, then I hope to have a better understanding because of input like this. This is what this forum is about (wish I had a thumbs up emoji).

Sorry, couldn't help it. Rifle will be used for target practice mostly until I get my hunting license and get out of bed. Then I wanna go drop a deer. 9 days out of 10 though, just ringing steel.

With this I'd say 100-200 the most, and if I can fins ir, 300+ I wanna say there's a class or course somewhere near me where you learn to shoot up to that distance. One of my friends took it last year, I'll have to check on that.
As far as hunting goes, I'd say no more than 150? Mostly up to and including 100? Just a guess though.

Why are you trying to zero at 25?
Get a ballistic caculator and see what the bullet is doing. Sight in at 100. Hold high for 25.
What scope are you using? What reticle? I ask cause if it does not return to zero then it could cause you to chase your tale more.

Not so much trying to zero at 25, just get it close at 25 so that I can adjust it at 100. I don't have access right now to a 100 yard range.
Currently using the Bushnell 3-9x40 scope that came on the Savage Axis XP I got. Regular duplex reticle. Sighting this is just practice for when I replace it soon.

better to look a ballistic calculator, find out how high it needs to be for 25. mark target for aiming point (POA). then mark where impact should be(POI). aim at POA. make bullet strike POI that you marked.
this will be FAR closer for when you get out at a 100. same skin job, just easier path.

It depends on your zero distance. You can be high or low at 25 yards. You need to have a zero distance in mind.

After all the back and forth, I decided on a last-minute deal I saw for a Nikon P-308 4-12x40. It was on sale, so I figured it was a good compromise between where I started, the features I was looking at, and quality. Less features than what I wanted, but I can always upgrade later (or build a new rifle)
I got new rings on order too.
Still have work to do on the consistency, and I need to get out to 100 yards. Just need to practice more, and shoot on something that doesn't move all over the damn place.
Questions, comments, criticism?

1, 2, 5, and 7 look like operator error. The group on the right is where the rifle is shooting.
I'm no expert but I'd go 1 more click left to bring that whole group to the center of the bulls otherwise it'll be more to the left at 100.

1 and 2 were definitely me. There was actually another sheet when I started, and it was higher and to the right as I got it sighted in, but it fell off the board when I reset the target. They just gave me new cardboard instead of letting me get the old one. "1" was actually my 3rd shot after getting the laser in the area.
At 25 yards, I was still using a rest, but the table it was on was still wobbling all over the place. I was also all the way zoomed in at 12x, so I was fighting off the reticle blur.
I very possibly could be off. Guess I'll have to go again and try your suggestion! Oh darn I'm just waiting for the snow to melt so I can lay down and have solid bags to rest on. Take everything out of the equation but me

One actual click on the windage knob to make the group of shots go left. I don't know how much your scope will move the shot. It may take just one or two actual clicks or just one click may move the whole group to the left of the bullseye in which case you are better off where you started.
You have to click and test.

Makes sense, I'll have to do that. Once I got so many holes in the target, it would have been a little harder to find the difference.

If those are one inch squares at 25 then you would want to make 16 clicks for a 1/4 inch adjustment scope, 32 clicks for a 1/8 inch adjustment scope for one inch movement. I think that 13-14 would actually put you on the bull though. You are still too high though, you will want to go down 1 1/2 inches (24 clicks or 48 clicks depending on the 1/4 or 1/8 ) so you are on at 100 yards

Yeah, the first sheet hit around the 5 high and 1 right mark. I think I then adjusted down enough (to 1), but my left to right was way off. Ended up going all the way over there. Eventually got it close.
