Sighted in Savage Axis 308 yesterday, few issues

If those are one inch squares at 25 then you would want to make 16 clicks for a 1/4 inch adjustment scope, 32 clicks for a 1/8 inch adjustment scope for one inch movement. I think that 13-14 would actually put you on the bull though. You are still too high though, you will want to go down 1 1/2 inches (24 clicks or 48 clicks depending on the 1/4 or 1/8 ) so you are on at 100 yards

i would say forgo the math.
.
go to the range. hold still. squeeze the trigger.

turn dial the direction you want to go.. shoot and repeat until your bullet strikes where you want it. if you need to move it far....turn the dial alot. if you go too far go back.

this is how i do it. (i am very scientific as you can see.)

remember to keep your POI a bit lower at 25 (based on your ballistic calc.) or you will be way off when you go out to 100.

before we go any further please post your ballistic calc. info so we know you have been doing your homework. it is useless to do this unless you understand what your ballistic calculator is telling you.

Don't break your head over that. Just move the dial until the majority of the group are in the center.

It may be 1 click or it may be 5 or 6. Just move it, fire 3 good ones, check where they are, and adjust the scope more if needed. Once you are done turning the dials, fire 3 more. Rinse and repeat until the majority is in the center.

Yea. Get it in the center at 25 than lower it an inch or 2. Once you get to a 100 yard range, see where they are hitting and adjust . You should be close at 100.

Leave the math for those genuises that need it. Guys like us don't need no stinking adding and subtracting. All we need is ammo.

Probably the best thing for me to remember (I know others have said the same). Just wish spring would come sooner so we can get out there and just do it already.

I still think you need to go to the range shoot a bullet turn some clicks and go measure your target.

While your chart is getting better, it's still not 100% correct for what you're trying to do.

Better just skip to the end ad do what dsdmat said to do. It will work if you use his numbers. (Still 16 clicks per inch at 25)

I wish they would have retrieved my first paper (the one that fell off). First two shots (actually went through the same hole) were 5" high and an inch right. Just to see if I was counting right, I clicked 64 clicks down (just to see where it'd hit) but only 16 left. The elevation ended up where I figured it would (shot #1 in this sheet, 4" lower) but somehow the shot went wwaaaaaaaaay left. After that I just did what you guys are suggesting, and just shot, looked, clicked, shot, looked, clicked, shot, etc.

What I should do is just wait to shoot until it's nicer out and go out and shoot 100y, instead of continuing to shoot 25. What I have the sights at now, I should just click them down like 2 clicks (see where it hits at 100y) and go from there. Like you all said, at the current calibration, it'll probably hit high at 100y, so I should lower it and see what we've got.

I'm glad I got the lift-to-zero turrets on this scope, definitely helpful.

I think the biggest part of the issues your having is the distance your shooting at. Shooting a 308 at 25 yards doesn't tell you a lot. It's hard to sight in properly. Groups don't tell you much. The math is more difficult for scope adjustments. It's hard to tell human errors in that distance, unless grossly bad. I think you will find out a lot and a lot more will make sense when you shoot at the proper venue.

Since your rifle does not have a heavy barrel I would wait at least 5 minutes between 3 shot groups (5 shot groups at the most). That way you are not chasing a wandering barrel.

The way you were doing it is fine. You are essentially doing a cold bore shot each time if you are waiting 5 minutes per shot.

When you go to shoot groups you want to wait between strings as to not heat the barrel up too much.

Yeah, more or less. I'd feel it intermittently and take a little extra time if it felt warmer than it needed to be (according to my expert judgement, ha).

5. adjust cross hairs to center of target
6. shoot rifle

8. throw laser bore sighter on ebay
9. buy more range time/ammo with sale of laser

Lol, it was a $20 laser and it got me close to start with, and I can see through that a lot easier than the bore. I don't know about you guys, but when I look through the bore, I can't see shit. It's tiny!

I too have a .308 axis combo,my scope was so far off from the factory that I must have went through at least 30 rounds before I could hit paper.
I had no idea where the bullets were going until I saw a lump of dirt fly up,it was shooting rediculously low even at 10 yards.

FWIW Lasers are hard to see at 100yds during the day outdoors

Can someone tell me what's the purpose of a boresighter?

I mean you set the target close at about 25 yds. You shoot, adjust, and shoot again. You cannot miss the paper.

Then go to a 100 and rinse and repeat.

Kinda turning this into my 308 build/sight-in thread. Might as well keep it all contained here.

This build is just about over. Added a Nikon sunshade, scope caps, and Caldwell bipod, I just need a sling and maybe a cheek rest. Oh, still waiting on my scope rings too. My friend talked me out of doing a MDT chassis in the future (I just liked how it looked and the ability to use different mags) and said I should just do a Boyd's and call it a day. It'll add the weight I want and not cost too much. Soon as it gets dry out, @NirvanaFan and I plan on getting some rounds down range. I can't wait.

I also need a new rifle case, lol. This one doesn't fit in the one I have anymore
