So its SHTF.... what guns do you grab

So for the sake of duscussion, say....an EMP just took out all communications and forms of central government, the world has just reverted to a local civilization and you are more or less on your own in a world without rule of law, or minimal laws.


What 2 guns would you want most, one handgun and one long gun


Would you prioritize a small concealed pistol or full size combat pistol?

What type of rifle or shotgun would you choose?

Obviously this is purely a hypothetical scenario, in no way am I implying that anyone has a fully featured AR and 30rd mags buried in the back yard...

If I am at work, I have my Glock 22 with three full mags, 46 rounds in total. I also carry my bug out bag everywhere so I will have another handgun, H&K VP9, I have three full mags for that as well,46.

I will head home; not that far to walk.

If I am home, I will stay with the H&K, I will also grab my sexy, white AR with as many 30 round mags as possible. If an EMP hits, I will be staying home for as long as possible so I should have access to all of my guns. If I were forced out of my home, those would be the two guns that I would have.

Glock 9mm and Glock 9mm carbine if I have to take to foot. I choose that combo because I don't plan on going Call of Duty and getting myself and family killed. It would be purely a defensive system. I'm good to about 150 yards realistically and because I don't have the extra rounds and magazines of a different caliber, I can move quicker.

Weight savings is many pounds.

I'm definitely not advocating going call of duty. Just 1 week, 1 month, 1 year after an emp if you are trying to live your life with stored food, finding new food, bartering, farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, bugging in, bugging out, defending etc... What would be the 1 pistol and 1 long gun you would want for all around usage where you couldn't predict now what situation you may find yourself in or what you would need.

So far some great ideas and things to consider.

Compact size (G19 ish) 9mm pistol and a 22 rifle. If I could take a second rifle it would be a shot gun.

Id grab my Glock 20 10mm and Ruger GP100 .357 because they are the ones I shoot the best.
I only have 2 mags for the G20 but id have to make it work.
A rifle is a tough call.
Most of my long guns are hunting rifles and shotguns.
Im tempted to say Benelli M4 because you only need on good shot to end a fight. With buckshot you dont even need to be all that accurate.
Id love to take my Savage 110BA 338 lapua but it weighs 16 pounds.
Maybe just a Henry 30-30 because I shoot it well and have tons of ammo.

If SHTF and I'm home I have a fair number of long guns (rifles and shotguns of various calibers to choose from) and quite a few handguns also of various calibers and sizes.

For the sake of the OP's question for handgun I'd go with my 6 inch S&W 686 in .357 Mag. My reason is that if we're in collapse I'm not going to be all that concerned about concealing. It'll take .38s for self-defense scenarios and it also it could double as a hunting weapon if I use the .357.

Long gun is a tougher call. Part of me would want to go with an AR style rifle in .223/5.56 caliber. But if I'm forced to get most of my meat from food probably a longer range weapon is in order. I'd probably go with my old standby for deer hunting which is my Remington 700 in .30-06.

Probably S&W 629 6.5" in 44mag as my handgun which is good for hunting and defense.

Long gun is difficult. Probably a scoped AR with buis as I have many internal replacement parts/tools for long term repairs and it can reach out and touch at a distance that I would like to keep intruders away at. Ammo carry amount also makes it nice a viable option.
The Bennelli M4 is a close second if it wasn't tfor ammo transport/carry.

I'm assuming this scenario is for a journey otherwise you can have them all at home. What if you can only take one pistol? Would it be a full size or a sneaky carry?

Not that there is anything wrong with it because I like them more, but that's no UZI, that's a MAC 10.

My plan is to stay home and not leave. I have a large 3 story house with great sight lines and an old block/stone foundation. I have a pond for water, good food stores, good gun and ammo stores. I have plenty of fresh water near by and some land to hunt and fish. I have a few friends and family very close that could get here and reenforce the compound. I also have fruit trees. My father in law has many guns, my brother in law was a bad ass in the army, my other brother in law can fix anything. My dads a cop and my mom has truck loads of food. I know my area well and I know where food can be found. Many berry bushes around, deer, turkey, rabbits, fish, and others.

My P99 in 40S&W because it's what I have and good with it out to 80yds on center mass targets. Rifle is another question. Don't know if I'd take my Savage bolt gun seems it'll reach out and touch em, or the AR. Can I take an extra upper? It's just parts right? lol

AKS74U with all the mags my plate carrier will hold and g19 with 2 extra mags. I only say the crappy g19 with the puny 9mm because it is the most common round that I'll be able to take off of dead bodies and use for myself.

YEA YEA you guys with caliber war issues will argue the fact..but I know EVERYONE has zillions of .22 and 9mm is next..yes the others will be found but I'm just saying my thoughts. My 3 different BOBs are already packed each with enough weight in ammo and 2 of those bags already have the guns in them also, so I can grab em and grab the Tacticool vest that's already filled to the gills with multiple calibers and magazines and run. The BOB in the car I don't keep stocked with the gun and ammo for obvious reasons and for temperature reasons. The guns in my other 2 bags are a .22 I don't use as much any more and the other bag holds my .38 S & W which I don't use much any longer either. Yes, a .22 isn't the greatest for SD but for SHTF it'll be a need of availability and versatility which a .22 will be. Hunting and protection rather than only protection worrys and limited ammo access. We all have our own thoughts on this scenario situation I'm sure and for this thread, the words I typed were my own

I'd definitely grab my beretta 92a1 I've got a bunch of mags and a ton of ammo. I'd carry the beretta and probably stuff the 1911 in my grab bag. No long gun for me I'm incredibly unskilled with long guns.

.22 is probably the best caliber for a zombie apocalypse.

I'd grab my S&W 629, 44mag with 40 rounds, and for a long gun, I'd go with my Marlin 30-30, with as many rounds as I can carry. I can make a 1" group at 100 yards with my trusty 30-30.

I'm think that while the PPQ is the more effective gun it might be more useful to have something that can go undetected.
