They hate Trump. They believe Notre Dame burned from an electrical accident.
Talking to them about Neighborhood Defense would just invite a visit to my door from the Police; that I was dangerous.
I really have no options.
I'm sleeping fully dressed; ready as I can be.
If TSHTF, all I can possibly do is thin the herd as best I can before I am murdered.

I guess it depends on many variables, how much warning and lead time I have, what have the local police been doing to respond etc.
Ideally I would avoid any confrontation.
If i had advance warning a violent mob was coming towards my neighborhood I would grab the family and bug out. Its just material property and I value keeping my family out of danger more than replaceable possessions.
Now,
If I am surprised by a violent mob with no warning and family is all home I would probably be preparing to defend their lives (and by defacto my house since that's where we would be bugging in)
I would immediately kit up. I have my plate carrier rifle and pistol right next to bed. I would probably position a shotgun and few boxes of 00 in a central place in kitchen for easy access.
I would not go outside. I would stay inside. I would not want to attract any extra attention. Hopefully they would pass me by.
I have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of a Molotov cocktail getting in.
If they decided to attack my family I would do what was needed to protect them.
If I was hearing gun fire I would have my kids go in the basement for more ballistic protection.
I would also have my wife watch the back of the house toake sure no one sneaks around while I watch the front and the bulk of the mob.

I live on a busy through street in town. I'm nowhere that has anything to offer looters as there are no businesses or upper-class houses on my street, but if the cretins decide to take a stroll through residential areas, my street would be a likely candidate. My inclination would be to send wife, younger kids and dogs off to in-laws in the woods, and remain behind with my eldest son(s) to surveil/defend, with a retreat vehicle staged in a nearby parking lot (that I can reach without being seen, the way the surrounding properties lie). We have commercial 2-way radios with a relatively advanced feature set, so we wouldn't be dependent on cell phones or worry much about eavesdroppers with Baofengs or promiscuous-mode DMR.
In the event of a huge crowd suddenly materializing in my street, I have a much larger problem as my wife is handicapped and can't move quickly. My paranoia level therefore is unusually high in situations like our current one, and I keep very close tabs on public service radio (and she on social media since I don't participate there).

Funny things that permeate people's consciousness... I hate hypothetical scenarios, but will chime in.
Agree on not standing outside, it's unnecessary, and puts you in an undefendable position should any focus be placed upon you.
Agree on preparedness, like having the car pointed facing away from your house, close to the door, ready to go!
Having all you magazines loaded, lol. And having your firearms on you and backups within reach. My house has compound lighting on all corners, and a flip of the switch gives me at least 15 yards of sight, all around... plenty good, but would stay off unless needed.
One handle pot of water boiling slowly is great stuff, just saying! Or hell, make it a few. Other than that, I would keep an eye out, but not do anything unless required to protect myself or my family. Property can be replaced, but that doesn't mean I'm abandoning it to the skells. And no, NY does not allow you to protect property, only lives!
Rioters walking in mass down my street is enough of a threat that if they enter my property, I consider that a direct and imminent threat to my family and my well being and lives. If they arrive at my door, they won't be happy, I can assure you. Come what may, but where I live, there wouldn't be a jury that would side with the rebel rousers over a homeowner!
As for community organizing, well the Hassidic Community recently showed us all that when SHTF, you do what you gotta do... Who's going to stop you? So a dozen home owners patrolling the neighborhood armed to the teeth isn't going to rattle any cages in my opinion. I'm just not sure if I'd join in... Lol
Lastly, the mob mentality is all good and stuff, until there's blood running. First smack in the face and a good 3/4 run for the hills... Let alone if a firearm was to go off. That said, when a body drops, you'll lose a good portion of the other 1/4, leaving maybe only a few hardened and purposeful miscreants that will deserve no quarter! No questions, no discussion, no worries, kick in my door, and it's lights out. Try and throw a Molotov, or do some other crazy shyt and yeah, I might go outside, but won't be hesitating for anything. I'd rather be picked up surrounded by brass than huddled in a corner of the crisp remnants of my home! Fuck them all!
Ok, now reset and forget the hypothetical... In all reality, the chance of this happening where I live is small. Extremely small, but not impossible. The importance is to be prepared for anything, but do not in any way, place expectations upon the event or outcome before, or if it ever happens.

I'm worried about getting stuck in the middle of a "protest" while in my car.
We've seen those videos and they escalate so fast. I dont have a ccw permit, yet, and I often wonder what I would do if caught in the middle of an angry mob while stuck in my car, and they start breaking windows to get me out of the car. I've conisdered buying a dedicated 870 to keep in my vehicles. But I haven't found a good way to keep a shotgun secure AND easily accessible in a SHTF scenario.

As an idea get a lockbox and anchor it to your frame under the front seat. Store your pistol in there while working. You can at least have access to your pistol on the way to and from work.

I was thinking about taking my AR with me in my car. Not legal to have it loaded though so not sure if I will. Also don’t want it in the vehicle to be stolen when I’m not inside.
An AR pistol with folding brace would be perfect. Can carry it with you in a backpack loaded and take it into a store with you. Set the bag in your cart. Nobody will even notice.

Every house and location would be different. Im up hill two 8 foot retaining walls with narrow staircases the 2nd one has a deceptively strong door i build myself . I would be posted up in the woods high above the steps anyone steps foot in the first stairwell will get dropped and have no idea where it came from. Move position and repeat. House lights off yard lights on.
