I'm thinking one of these rifles might be fun and interesting....but much more so with a suppressor

Meh, 9mm out of 16" barrel is hardly deafening and with a suppressor mounted the PC looks rather ungainly. When it comes to supressors I'm mire interested in integral designs or cans mounted to short barrels. A can on a 9mm carbine is just a novelty as far as I'm concerned.
A 5.56 carbine is a different story.

Not only fun and interesting, but practical.

I've shot my 9mm AR at 125 yards standing and was able to put the majority of my shots into an 8 inch circle. I'm sure if prone and I learned the holdovers, it could easily reach 200 yards. I don't concern myself too much with that because it's a defensive weapon rather than an offensive one.

A shot to vitals with a 9mm carbine at close indoor range is going to kill a human just as dead as a shot to vitals would with a low powered rifle with less recoil, no flash and no concussion.

I actually find it better suited for indoor home defense and the plus is that it takes the same magazines as my pistol. So when I strap on my battle belt that's under the bed, no matter if I grab the rifle or pistol, the reloading ability is the same.

I'm surprised no one has made a hollow point using mild steel. Steel would be inexpensive and plentiful. Make a design like the new hydra-shock deep but instead of the post being lead put a mild steel cylinder in there.

True, but my ears are ringing just thinking about it. The part of home defense we never talk about. Open your slider and stand in the house and take a shot at the outdoors. Gives new definition to loud.

Something happens when you are pumped with adrenalin, I have shot and been next to them being shot, and do not remember ever having a my ears ringing, sometimes you don't have time for ear plugs. I wonder if some kind of study has ever been done.

Same thing happens to me when I hunt and take a shot at game. Rifle or shotgun with at least 22" of barrel, do-able. Handguns, my ears ring afterwords no matter what.

I think it has to do with the muzzle blast being by your ears. In the military there are many times when you fire a rifle without hearing protection and your ears aren't totally screwed up.

Barrel length most definitely has to be a factor.

Agreed. Been there done that. If I was younger, starting my hunting and shooting career from scratch, I'd have worn hearing protection at every available and convenient opportunity. Over the years hunting without it takes a toll, as does plinking with .22's. And that's outdoors, with one reflective surface, the ground. Multiply that x6 or so...floor, 4 walls, ceiling...basically a concussion grenade.

I'll quit hijacking the thread with one last statement. I think for indoor scenarios I'd strongly consider some type of subsonic 9mm ammo, if it was dependable in my rifle, to help reduce noise. Accuracy would be of little consequence at 21 feet.

Gold Dots generally don't expand quite as much as some other brands and the standard pressure, heavy 9mm might keep the velocity under the critical threshold?

Good question. Without testing I guess you would have to make a guess as to if an extra 23 grains would slow the velocity down enough to not destroy the bullet and still penetrate adequately. I've moved on from hollow points a while back. It seems monoliths of certain design do the job no matter how fast you sling them.

147’s don’t pick up a lot of speed. That may work but it will still expand a little more reducing some penetration.

Check out ballistics by the inch. They only pick up a little velocity.

Something much closer to m1 carbine performance is .357 out of a rifle.

For instance, a 158 grain .357 out of. 20" barrel is traveling at approximately 1800 feet per second, and absolutely offers better penetration and power delivery than the 110 grain m1 round.


I also would absolutely choose the .357 carbine over a 5.56 rifle every time for medium sized predator defense (black bear, cougar, etc).
