Stupid question its ok to leave CLP residue on gun right?

I think it's fine but just wanted to check. Finally did some shooting after a long break. Dropped one of my guns in about 10" of snow ugh. I'm at my buddy's place and only had some CLP with me. I disassembled and cleaned up all the guns last night but there is a fair amount of CLP left on some of the guns particularly on inside crevices of the slides. That's OK right? Assuming the CLP is mainly oil. I can clean them up better when I get home. Thanks.

CLP ... Clean, Lubricate, Protect.

Yes, it's fine to leave a layer of it on your gat. Just be careful that it doesn't soak into a wooden stock or grips. If left in contact with wood finishes long enough, it may damage the finish as well. But as far as the metal parts, it's all good.

CLP dries up and leaves protective teflon film. That's how it was designed to work. I have it on all of my guns, it will keep the rust off the stored guns for decades.
Modern wooden stock finishes are resistant to CLP. You can prove this to yourself on the cheapest gun you have.

The only guns I wouldn't use it on are air rifles. It can damage rubber seals.

Thanks guys I was more concerned about dropping the gun in the snow... dumba$$$ lol. To it's credit it ran fine. Ruger LC9 slide was locked back and inside of back of slide got packed with snow. I banged as much of it out as I could and ran a mag through it seemed to dry it right up lol. Still wanted to get some oil in it when we got home. All I had in my range bag was a can of CLP.

In basic training we would roll in the mud with our rifles, jump in the lake and what not. When we would get back to the squad bay, we would take a shower naked with rifles. Then we would field strip our rifles and go over all parts with the CLP. Never saw a spot of rust.
I compete in rifle matches where we shoot in the elements, sometimes in the pouring rain. If the rifle was previously treated with CLP it will hold back the rust, but The rifle needs to be wiped down with CLP again, because second time it gets wet all bets are off. All my metal shooting gear and my tools are treated with CLP.
However I avoid using CLP on most of reloading tools, to avoid possibility of contaminating primers and powder. I use non-detergent motor oil or nothing on these. This gallon container lasts me decade or so.

Yes it's the same thing. Aerosol is even better, it foams up and easily gets into every cravis, I have a can as well to use on triggers and innards of lower receivers.

Teflon doesn't evaporate. It will protect firearms stored in dry, temperature stable conditions for decades. Speaking from personal experience. Internet gun gurus can disagree.

I've always used Hoppe's gun oil or synthetic motor oil. But I'd like pick up some CLP. There are a lot of CLP brands. Is there a difference, or a preferred brand?

Break Free CLP is the most common and time tested. There are other brands of CLP that weren't used long enough or by as many users to establish the same reputation. Break Free also make other gun solvents, so if you buy it make sure it is labeled CLP. Shake well before use, teflon tends to settle at the bottom.

You are supposed to leave some kind of oil in your guns, just a film in the internals.
I have largely moved over to Ballistol myself but it is also a CLP type.

Yeah I know that it was just really wet more than just a film so wasn't sure if it would be OK or not. I looked at them today and seems most of the excess dried up.

I say film just because an excess of oil will just attract that much more dust, dirt and debris. In wet,humid or corrosive environments it is actually preferable to have a copious amount of whatever lubricant you prefer in the firearm. In dry, sandy/dusty environments it is best to leave the gun with minimal oil in.
Unless you are running an M240/FN MAG. In that case you do whatever the hell you want to it and it'll run. You could clean those things by pissing on them and they'd still run.

Breakfree CLP is a preservative as well as a lubricant. A film protects the metal however over time it might gel up and gunk up moving parts . Ballistol is used more by collectors because it doesn’t gum up. Breakfree also makes a collector’s oil in addition to CLP

Assuming you're referring to BreakFree CLP, it contains no teflon, unless you have a really old bottle or something.

BreakFree is a polymerized synthetic and will not gel up. It also contains advanced boundary film additives as well as rust inhibitors. It contains no wax based substances. Ballistol is an inferior product consisting of mostly mineral oil and alcohol. I wouldn't use it on anything I own. It is an ok cleaner but poor lubricant. Also smells like a skunk's nut sack.

Have no idea how old my can is but it does say it contains PTFE which is generic Teflon, no? Did they change formula?
