Been working in the city going on 4 months now. It's been a big change. I walk amongst these zombies like one of them. I get bumped into regularly by some moron with their face in their phone. Despite the city putting up bollards in Times Square to protect the people who stand around, I feel like these sheep are just.....just destined for something bad to happen to them. I bring my get home bag to work everyday. Water, first aid, light, fire, knife and an extra shirt. I already know I'm meeting up with @Willjr75 in the tunnels to get the hell out of here if SHTF. How the hell do you get through a crowded city though? I have a hard enough time during rush hour.

What's your plan?

Ive been in the city as a photographer since 1989. been everywhere covering stories.
was here on 911 and the blackout.
if you want out, think counter intuitive.
dont rush to the rivers! instead, go to the center of the city and then go north.
stay away from all the big spans, go upward to the bronx. you may be on the wrong side of the river, but thats a better problem then the mess known as the bridges and tunnels.

Where are the tunnels going to get you? Long island or Jersey. You need to go north over one of the many bridges to the Bronx and keep going from there.

Metro North tunnels will get you from Grand Central to 125th st on the elevated structure over a bridge to the Bronx on outside railroad tracks. After that, the tracks lead to Westchester followed by Putnam and Dutchess or Westchester and Connecticut. The tracks will be free from congestion.

This is assuming trains aren't running. An EMP, Dirty bomb, ect.

Grand Central would be a disaster. Go north anyway you can, above or below ground. Once you get to the Harlem river you have many choices including a short swim.

I agree that on the northern tip of Manhattan there is a number of crossing you will be able to vacate the city. If on foot, well, it's still better than 2 bridges and tunnel to get you to Queens, which is on an Island and in SHTF consideration, a trap. 2 tunnels and one bridge to NJ, Not so bad if you immediately hightail it to one of them the minute something happens. Let's forget Brooklyn, ok. But north, there the HHBridge, Madison AVe, 3rd Are, Viaduct, Cross Bronx over the East River, and more. Lol

But again, can't stress enough, a plan, in place and preparedness for action is paramount. You bug out without waiting, thinking or discussing, just go! Move quickly, you can be out of Manhattan within 20-30 mins from almost anywhere by foot. It would also be smart to have that plan laid out and discussed with others at home or friends before hand, that if you need a pick up, where and how. Or rent a car locations, or hell, a citibike! Lol, will sure beat walking!

I’m confident that whatever they are running from will not an immediate threat in and of itself (ie some event that has made the average citizens’ survival tough, but not a direct threat to life). Accepting that, my threat is the fleeing hordes. Best bet? Don’t become one of them!

Should I have to leave, once the family is secured I’ll use a raft that I have to cross the Kill Van Kull into NJ. It’s a small shipping lane that separates SI from NJ. Once again, since 99% of the people are going to be attempting to navigate one of our 4 bridges, this short hop across a relatively mild waterway is what I consider the best bet.

But again, my concerns are different because the people who matter to me are here, within close proximity, especially now that I work basically in my own backyard. I’m not bothering to attempt to preserve my own life unless I can preserve theirs also.

What kind of raft do you have? I have a Saturn 12.5 foot. It's great. Can row it, use electric motor or up to 25 hp outboard. It's tough and folds up to fit in a pretty small bag. I fish out of it all the time. They are very tough.

You know, I don’t know much about it. I was given it years ago, used it once in NJ, then deflated it and keep it at my mom’s. I should probably look more into that. It will easily hold my wife and I and the 3 kids, that I know.

That's your home. It's a good plan. You'll be a fool to leave unless it's hazardous. Radiation, ECT.

Most people want to bug out but where to? Another location where those people are bugging out too or staying put and guarding their territory from you? It's best to stay put with supplies and wait it out.

Airborneguy, get tractor trailers, block those bridges, and set up watches. You have a natural fortress. You can hunt deer and fish too.

Your mission is like that guy Lee Harding in "The Remaining" book series. Use your training and create an adhoc army to guard the island.

I plan on stealing one once I hit Westchester. They are cabled to the fences at all Metro North stations. Taking one of those bikes would get me home in hours rather than days.

I have 2 of these. The small one in my wife's car so she can escape Rockland if SHTF, an the other for fishing. Awesome raft.

I dunno. I got a 72 hour bugout bag stashed somewhere in the truck and a 1 month supply of Wise emergency food (1 buckets worth) and 5 gallons of potable water in a surplus water can. This in addition to the regular use water and foods I keep in here. I also have 1 full weeks worth of clothing in here with extra socks and underwears. I got a couple of different first aid kits in here, general toiletries, lotta blankets, rain gear, one pair sneakers, one pair boots, jacket, coat. I also have an inverter to run a fridge, tv, playstation, CB radio, heating and air ect. With full tanks I'd have enough juice for days, maybe weeks If I'm very judicious about usage. If I can escape the initial ugliness and find a safe, quiet spot I imagine I'd be perfectly comfortable for a little while at least. Or I'd die in a riot right away. Oh, I have a large supply of porn as well. That's crucial.
