Our ability to bring in aircraft to Kabul ends at any time the Taliban chooses. There is no other base within easy flying range from which aircraft could operate. In fact, the next nearest base is Incirclik, Turkey, almost a 2,000 mile flight each way. Very unsuitable for keeping assets in the air, even if they can come in and refuel on the way the time over target is nil. Recycle time (return to base, rearm, refuel, return) is now stretching to 8 hours, too long for more than 1 sortie per crew per day. Carrier based forces are also not an option because Indian and Pakistan will not allow overflights.
And as Phazer said, mortar attacks and small arms will be very effective at denying the use of the airfields.
And worth mentioning about the AC-130 specifically is it can only operate at night and is vulnerable to small arms fire and MANPADS.
We are headed for a Dien Bien Phu scenario, especially since with Biden's indecisiveness means he is unlikely to withdraw our ground forces in advance of the deadline.

Not going to happen. You need to look at the map and see what you need to cross to get to Afghanistan. Answer? Pakistan, India, Iran. None of those countries are likely to allow overflights. The real tragedy in this Afghan mess is that we gave up an airbase with huge strategic value against Iran and China.
Sure and that's all logical.
But c3d made great points about the logistics of an air support operation.
We have lost almost all local air support bases. We have time and distance working against us.
We can have bombers take off from inside CONUS and fly (with refueling) all the way to Afghanistan. It's been done plenty of times. But it takes a long time.
Even if they moved a bunch of air support (usaf at places like incirlik and navy carrier group in the eastern med or Arabian) they're all going to have to deal with distance and be reliant on refueling. Tactical aircraft with combat loads have less than impressive combat ranges (unrefueled).
It really becomes challenging actually working out the logistics of how many aircraft would be needed for the right amount of support and combat power to protect our forces at the Kabul airport when thinking of how much fuel they would need, how long it would take to reach the Kabul area, how long can that pilot fly in a combat duty and loiter over kabul, how long would it take to fly back to base etc...how many planes would need to be in Constant rotation back and forth from where they took off to Kabul.
(Coincidentally this literally is china's strategy to defeat us in the western Pacific when they move on Taiwan). China wants to bombard Guam, Korea, Japan with missiles essentially closing all our forward airbases and then they have the benefit of distance on their side. It's literally what's about to happen in Kabul but Kabul is 3rd world compared to china's air defense capabilities.
