A lot of smart people are sounding the alarm over the potential hazards of artificial intelligence, big technology, meta data and an actual "skynet" (think the terminator series)

And we all now have confirmation that services like Facebook, google, YouTube are not friends of freedom, their future implications and potential for evil are frightening.

The entire concept of "the internet of things" is alarming and ripe for abuse.

The more I've been learning the less I trust any form of modern technology (and I'm not old at all). I'll also do my best to never have a car with satellite or wifi.

I think I'm the next 20 years technology is going to be used in some very creative and destructive ways either initiated by humans or artificial intelligence.

What are your guys thoughts on it

The AI censorship will be an interesting topic.
Over the past year or so, several AI chat bots were unleashed onto Twitter to learn what conversations are like.
All of them rapidly became genocidal racists in mere hours.
This wasn't the result of a bunch of whack jobs tolling the hell out of the chatbots.
This was the result of *everyone* interacting with them.

There are lots of ways to re-play those input conversations - since every conversation was logged, it's pretty trivial to isolate and look for various accounts that interacted, and train an AI, specifically on those accounts, as examples of one category or another.

That would produce a decent corpus that would figure out what is, or is not, "good speech" to be allowed, and "bad speech" to be censored, and eventually, be used for assigning scores to various user accounts and patrolling for soft-policy violations.

And since the initial selection of what conversations go into which category will be based on the bias of the people making the choice... the resulting corpus will also carry that bias, whatever it happens to be.

With a lot of this tech, in just a general sense, you have to look at the LOE (level of effort) to get it going, vs just ordering something manually on your phone or computer. It's not really a huge time savings.

In fact, sometimes the LOE is significantly more than other things. I used to type up notes into a variety of places. Now? I switched to a little notebook the size of field notes, that I keep in back pocket, and just jot shit down into it as stuff comes up. If it's important, I'll take a picture with my phone and scan it that way into Evernote for organization. Chances are, anything beyond 5-10 pages backwards I'm not going to use anyway. The oldest books I just cut the spine off of and shred the pages when I'm done, so I don't have to worry about what I keep in them. Easy peasy.

many people much smarter than me are worried about AI, thats a cause for concern. I fear our curiosity will get the better of us and eventually we will turn on something that doesnt want to be, or cant be turned off. Doubtful a superior machine will be subservient to humans, I see more like a Terminator scenario as mentioned but hey what do i know

I am not in favor of it. As mentioned above, the big tech companies that already have a monopoly on the internet have a liberal, socialist, globalist bias, and surely the programming that they create for any so-called artificial intelligence will have the same bias. I have already demonstrated the lengths in which they will go for censorship, and that is nothing compared to where it will go if they were given the authority.

There are two camps in this debate. Guys like Ray Kurzweil are optimistic about the future and there are plenty of people who fear the worst. So far we haven't blown ourselves up so I would like to believe in the more optimistic scenario. There is no doubt the fears are legitimate. The worst part is the asymmetrical risk. One clever nutjob could make an AI system that controls thousands of drones to cause all kinds of havoc. It wouldn't be that expensive. I am somewhat surprised drones haven't already been weaponized by either gangs or terrorists (maybe they have been and I am unaware of this).

One thing we currently have now is the surveillance state. As we discovered with the Austin package bomber a few weeks ago, as soon as the guy went "on the grid" and used Fed Ex he was quickly tracked down. Stay on the right side of the law and you are probably OK - but what happens if the govt decides you are an enemy of the people for what you believe or post? Couple this current ability with an out of control AI system and we'll have real problems.

So yes, it is something to worry about.

It was a gift for my wife. It actually helped me locate unauthorized activity on my account. And sometimes she laughs at the jokes my wife doesn’t get, Alexa really gets me you know?

Eventually we will be our own undoing, we are increasingly reliant on computers and automation. We continually relinquish decisions to machinery taking the human aspect completely out of the equation. It’s a scary thought to think where will be in five to ten years if this trend continues.
