I think it's an interesting societal indicator or metric that so many civilians are buying body armor that the manufacturers simply can't keep up.

I work armored car, buying it on my own, not through the company. Don’t think it would have made any difference though cause even the company ordered vests can take just as long to come in
I was looking at a setup like that but they really stick it to you if you order the bigger size plates. They take away the bundle pricing and it jumps a couple hundred.

Wasn’t too bad only went up about 150 or so once I added the trauma pads and side plates, all together the set up I ordered was about 350’ish. Went with lvl 3, didn’t really see the need to order lvl 3+ or 4
That is for the standard size. What I'm talking about is if you go up to the larger plates you have to buy everything separately and it goes up to $600-$700

I ordered the 10x12 front and back 6x8 sides, and matching size trauma pads. Caught some kind of sale they were running at the time.
I need 11x14. All bundles go out the window with that size.

Honestly with AR500 plate, is NIJ certification even necessary ?
The AR500 is the standard it meets and that is presumably well controlled at the steel mill, one guys AR500 plate will stop the same stuff as anyone else's in the same thickness.
But how are you going to claim its level 3 if thats a standard of NIJ??
But then again NIJ doesn't certify targets they certify armor soooo

They can claim it will stop all the threats that NIJ level 3 armor will stop. Certainly any 3/8" AR500 plate will. They just can't claim it was actually tested at NIJ level 3 unless it went through the full protocol.
But since it's just a chunk of steel, and they don't test every plate anyway, it's just as good.
"brand 'A' made 1000 sets of armor out of 3/8" AR500 and sent one of them to a lab for testing"
"brand 'B' did the same thing but sold all 1000 and skipped the cost of the testing"
And like I said they don't even go to the lengths of misrepresenting their products to mention "tested to NIJ standards"
But again poor people will fall for anything, its just weird how far on the spectrum of poor they will go when it comes to life saving equipment

Everything is a balance. Maybe someone is on a tight budget and they can only afford $300 all in. It's steel plates or nothing.
Steel has advantage of being durable bouncing around in a trunk for years as an example, a very long life span. Etc.
I have a set of steel plates. I'm happy with them. Hope I never need them but I'm glad they're there in case.
If I ever buy a 2nd set I will get something like this

Again, life is a series of choices and compromises. I have a family, I'm on a budget I can't just buy anything I want regardless if I can justify the extra expense or not. I have to live within my means.
I bought a set of plates, with full build up coating to catch any fragmenting, a plate carrier and pouches including shipping for like $220. I got a smoking deal on them.
Even if I could save up for a better $1000 set then I wouldn't have been able to use that extra $800 on other things like ammo, food, medical kit, another gun etc..
Life is choices and compromises. I'm satisfied with my decisions.
Do I acknowledge I would rather have a $1000 ceramic nij Certified level 4 setup with a nicer carrier? Yes. That would be awesome.
But in my case and I'm sure with others you make compromises and trade offs.

I mean Hoplite sells Sets of NIJ certified level IV triple curved Sapi or Swimmer cut stand alone plates for right around $500
So a set, front and back plates, NIJ certified (26605) triple curved for $509.
