Every time Russia yielded to the West it lost. Started in Germany with "take down that wall Mr. Gorbachev". Progressed to a war on his territory, ignited and fueled by the West. If Russia didn't make a stand, it would simply disappear in another few decades. Putin knows it.

Who had the means, motive and opportunity to sabotage the pipeline. Ukraine has the motive but not the means Russia has the means , but no motive. They could just shut it off, Germany doesnt have the means nor the motive they need Russian gas. UK and US has the means the motive and the opportunity.

By the way, what were the results of those referendums? I'm guessing they had high approval rates like in the high 90's.
I don't see this as odd, because most from pro-Ukrainian side already left these regions.

Russia could have acknowledged that its time as a superpower was over and just accepted it's new role on the world like Britain did after WWII.
They could have become a respected member of the international community. No longer a super power, but more a peer of Germany or England, etc...
But, no, they couldn't accept that, so now they are a pariah and are going to be a peer of Iran and Syria instead.

Does that apply to the hood rats that think the world owes then whatever they want to take because they are "victims" ? They have a culture and are a people. But their culture is incompatible with our society, so they can't be tolerated.
If Russia thinks the world owes them Ukraine, it's just as bad.
They can do what they want inside their borders. But when they start annexing neighbors against their will, we cannot tolerate that.

The Soviet union maintained these territories (while decrying the "colonialism" of the west). When the USSR collapsed these separate and distinct nations and people demanded their freedom. Putin wants to re-constitute a nation that does not normally exist without force. Ethnic Russians are a minority in their own country. They have no legitimate claim to these other territories.

This is my point I've made repeatedly.
We don't have to agree with Russia on everything. But it would have been infinitely wiser to keep Russia more aligned with us and away from China.
We should be cooperating with Russia not turn them into a pariah
Now we are going to be forced to fight them along with china at some point in the future.
All American citizens have been ordered to leave Russia. The embassy is closing, in the US has since empty planes to return American citizens.
