I remember reading about the Vietnam war. First it was just air support. Then the VC started attacking the air bases. So we needed troops to defend the bases. But the attacks didn't stop. So then we needed more troops to go into the jungle on search and destroy missions. But that was ineffective. So we needed more troops to go after the staging areas where the attacking forces were assembled. And that's how we went from a limited engagement to a full scale war. Don't think it can't happen again.
