If you're not very close to ground zero, then your primary danger is flying debris.
Hiding under the desk is a very effective way to protect yourself when the glass in the windows is shattered and blown into the room at high speed.
It's also very useful if your flimsy single story schoolhouse partially collapses from the Shockwave.
Nuclear weapons do not work the way they do in Hollywood, and the vast majority of people aren't going to be so close to the blast that it isn't survivable.
Especially those in rural communities.
