Hey everyone, I read posts here all the time, but obviously never post so here goes a long one:
Bought my SCR from Gander Mountain a couple of years ago for 700 and change. Also got the Ares irons on it, bolt catch and bought the monte carlo stock, so probably put another 200 into it right there. They seem to be selling for quite a bit more now on gunbroker, and mine is gently used so I can at least get my money back if not make some.
Here’s my issue with the SCR: I’m very particular about cheek weld. I have to be able to push a rifle right under my cheek bone and have the irons line up perfectly when I shoulder it. This is the case with most of my guns, scoped or irons. For whatever reason, even with the monte carlo, I have to tilt my neck to get the SCR irons lined up. Basically I have to search for my sight picture when I quickly shoulder the weapon. I know, it sounds petty, but it’s a real annoyance to me. Also, there’s absolutely no way to get a cheek weld with a scope, red dot etc. without some modification. And the mag release is terribly positioned.
Now the mini 14 is the same in that you can’t install optics without also installing some form of cheek pad (if you don’t want a chin weld), but the irons seem to line up perfectly for me, and I’m thinking I won’t put optics on it. Also the controls seem more intuitive. I hear accuracy still isn’t up to AR standards on the current series, but I’m not planning to shoot past 200m at the most (probably inside 100).
The upside to the SCR is being able to easily add a light to the weapon. Changing uppers is not really a big deal to me, just want at least one 5.56 that’s unquestionably legal (which leaves almost no options). I’m a big fan of the gen III thordsen stocks but without any official acceptance, I would be uncomfortable considering it for any form of defensive role.
This point could be moot as I think the new pc9 will replace my intermediate cartridge rifles as a home defense gun; it can have a light mounted, supposedly has comb adjustments, and won’t destroy my hearing or my home.
Am I making a mistake selling the SCR? Is there anything I’m overlooking? For reference, I’m considering the ranch model with synthetic stock, 16 inch SS barrel.
As an aside, I’m really hoping Kel Tec doesn’t screw up the RDB-S. Short OAL with an AR style cheek weld for optics sounds like the perfect “safe” compliant 5.56 rifle.
