Thoughts on Nuclear survival

I ran across the below article on the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan and how after 6 years this remains highly radioactive and the clean up has about stalled due to the high levels...Even robots used to help clean up are shutting down after a few hours due to the radiation.

Kind of gets me thinking about the power plant near me the RE Ginna nuclear power plant in Wayne County is about 40 miles away, then i read that within 50 miles of a NPP you are considered to be in a "ingestion pathway zone". Meaning plants and water could be effected from an event. Kind of two close to home... if anyone is interested the following website has safety reports and it looks like this is updated daily.

What preps if any do others in the area have in case of an event?

I don't see that there is all that much you can do other than to have your evacuation plan laid out in advance. And to leave sooner, before the crush, than later. They still can't send anyone into that one reactor unit on three mile island due to leathally high radiation levels. Radiation is bad juju man, sticks around for many generations.

That's why I would bug out at the first whiff of trouble at a nuclear plant. If you wait for the official order its proly too late.

It's a bad situation though. If you bug out can you still commute to work? Are you spending money on hotels? It's a tough desicion. I would study the Three Mile Island incident and other nuclear snafus to try to gain some insight on when to leave and how far to go.

The best thing is to choose a residence or BOL that is not in the vicinity or downwind from a nuclear point source. I'd also avoid residing close to a prison, old landfill or chemical plants. Google earth can be your friend...sometimes.

Don't know, never wanna find out. My guess is if you can perceive radiation you have already been exposed to a lethal ammount.

Never heard that before. There is radiation around you at all times, so unless you constantly smell almonds I would have to say no. I have had the pleasure of visiting a live reactor at one of the schools I attended in 2009, it was a research reactor located in Missouri near Fort Lenard Wood. The reactor is in a pool that is 30 feet deep and it has the purest blue glow in the water I have ever seen.

It is positively bone chilling how close to a Chernobyl level catastrophe that came! The part where the guy they sent to collect a water sample that was glowing and vibrating in the beaker with radiation gives me the heeebie jeebies! As does the fact that the other unit is still operating! I wouldn't step foot on that island for a million dollars!!

Well that's kinda silly too. We prepare for the worst yes, but we must truly hope for the best as well and this requires planning as well. The longer term planning for the after.

Except for the cities. And the prisons. And the hungry angry butthurt millenials. And the small town heroin epidemic. And the SAFE Act. And the inflated property taxes. And the sucky STAR program. Not to hijack this thread but just other things to be aware of that may be potential hazards near your home or community.

If you live near active rail lines watch this
They ship the nastiest most dangerous chemicals by rail that they won't ship by truck on roads. In particular many tanker cars are either flammable, explosive, poison (they ship cyanide by rail) toxic inhalation hazards etc...

Just something to be aware of.

Also, if you live or work near an industrial chemical plant you should be alert as well because they have potential to kill you as well.

Chlorine, or ammonia ? Ammonia is a common, dangerous, industrial refrigerant.

The good thing about ginna is that it's on the south side of the lake and with prevailing winds from the south east if you're in the rochester area you'd not have the wind carrying it to you. But, yeah, the best thing you can do is simply evacuate the area asap!
