thread protector - 315 area

Hey everyone. Is there anyone in the Syracuse area that can permanently fix a thread protector on a barrel for a reasonable price? I'm not sure of the correct process, ie: pin and spot weld, spot weld only, silver solder, or some sort of chemical bond...

Silver solder + mapp gas torch. You can do it yourself cheaper than paying someone else.

I thought of attempting this....will the heat from the MAP gas ruin the bluing on the thread protector?

Not unless you go crazy with the heat.

I used a silver solder / flux paste that comes in a tube. Clean the blue from the threads, put on a little of the paste, assemble, then heat until you see the solder melt and flow a bit.

Thread it on and be done with it? Ianal but I doubt anyone is gonna check if it's not something potential nfa material.

locktite and snug it up ... they can't use tools to undo it .. if it don't come off by hands .. it's fixed .. FUAC ..

There are some silver based solders that will liquify at around 450 deg's F., But if Acer is right, that's the way I would go.

Blue loctite should do it. If needed its bond can be broken without applying heat. I don't recommend applying heat to the barrel if it can be avoided.

No, anybody can work on anyone's gun. However you can't take possession of it. So I can't have @Loworange88 ship me his gun to throw a thread protector on it. That would require an FFL. But if he drove down to me and I did it with him standing next to me, that's all gtg.

You don't happen to have a similar letter from the NY State Police, the agency with jurisdiction over the matter at hand, do you?

Nope. But why go against ATF regs? Laziness? Is 30 bucks saved worth it?

It can't hurt, but it might not help.

Reasons not to follow a 20 year old ATF letter...its not doable in a home shop unless you've got a tig welder and know how to use it, high temp solder at 1,100°+ is going to mess with barrel strength and finish, and nobody knows if those mods are going to be kosher for unSafe law compliance.

Those regs still apply to barrel length so it's still relevant. They even have them in their codes.

As far as not having the tools, one either buys the tools to do the job properly or he sends it away for a Smith to do it if he wants a leg to stand on. That's how I see it. Especially when your freedom is on the line. But one can do what he wants. He can also have a 15.5 inch barrel. He'll just have to answer for it in the off chance he's ever caught and a DA has a bug up his or her ass. That'll cost time and money. Much more than 30 bucks to send it away.

I understand NY doesn't have regs on how to do it but the ATF does. (Especially for barrel length) In the event anyone finds themselves in court, one can say they followed ATF regulations on how to do the job properly. One cannot say the same with blue or red Loctite.

I'd much rather steer the OP to do it the way any professional Smith worth his salt would do it rather than telling him to just use glue and not worry about it.

Use blue loctite, don't buy into paranoia. I wouldn't let anyone weld anything to the barrel.
