I have nearly a dozen pistols in various calibers. Two are in .40 cal. I like them both though I can't say that I like them more than any other.
It's nice to see that the caliber war is alive and well. I for one think of all the calibers out there as women. Each of them may have a different shape and personality but as long as they can perform when it counts, that's all that really matters.
That attitude may be one of the reasons I'm still single.

Many people argue calibers without even knowing how bullets work. They think bigger is better or more velocity is better. They argue because they just happen to blindly choose one caliber when they got their first gun or someone chose it for them.
The fact of the matter is, on a human body, whether you get shot with a modern .38 Special hollow point or a modern .357 Magnum or Sig hollow point, they are all designed to penetrate to a depth of between 12 to 18 inches and expand to about the same diameter with some exceptions dependant on bullet construction. In a FMJ or Hard Cast, they will all completely penetrate through both sides of a human body in most cases. Bullet weight and velocity only come into effect as far as penetrating goes when a body is deep like a body of a large animal like a bear or when going through hard barriers like steel, glass, or wood. The more powerful .357 Magnum or Sig calibers comes at a price of more recoil yet will do the same to a thin, fragile, human body as would the .38 Special. An extra 200 to 400 fps will make no difference on a human body.
The .40 and 10mm follow the same concept.
As far as the 9mm and .40 S&W go, depending on the particular round, they penetrate to about inches of one another and expand to millimeters of one another. Some 9mm rounds actually expand larger and penetrate deeper than some .40 S&W rounds. It all depends on the construction of the round you choose. Before the Miami Shootout, 9mm rounds were designed for maximum expansion only since that was the craze at the time with no guidelines for penetration. After research and adoption of the. 40 S&W that was designed from the ground up to behave a certain way, 9mm manufacturers designed their bullets to behave similarly. At that point, many PD's had already switched and the bias was already ingrained.
When it comes to the .45 ACP though, all bets are off. That round is designed to drop horses right in their tracks no matter what type of bullet is used. On a human body, 1 shot and there is immediate incapacitation even if shot in a non vital area like the foot.

Worth mentioning that the 9mm has historically had issues penetrating auto glass and other barriers. Where the 40 out performed the 45 and the 9mm in these situations. I wonder if new loadings have alleviated the issue, or if police are settling for not shooting drivers through the windshield.

From what I've seen in unscientific YouTube tests, those rounds had no such issues penetrating glass but rather had more defection of a few inches compared to other calibers that had minimal if not none.

Yeah I am one of those guys that the news reporters gasp at while the pee in their panties. (and police found 5000 rounds of ammunition in the mans house) 5 or 10 thousand rounds ain't a lot, after all, they don't eat!
Probably 2500 .22's - 100 25 cal - thousands of 38 special for PPC

Zero .40 or 10 mm. oops missed .32's none of those either.
Not even gonna mention my rifle ammo.
I just don't want to have another caliber to shop for. That is the only reason I don't own a gun in those calibers. However, if I happen to win one in a Gun Raffle well then I just figure God is trying to tell me something.

5000 rounds of .22lr will fit in one .50cal ammo can.
500 rounds is one day at the range depending on what you're up to, so talking about some guy having "1000 rounds of x" would be like complaining that someone had "2 cases of beer, who needs that much"....."

The really screwy part, is the guy buying ammo 1000rnds at a time is more likely to be a law abiding gun owner than the guy who only wants one box.
The vast majority of crimes committed with a gun involve less than 10 rounds. The guy who puts enough ammo downrange to need 1000rnds is obviously someone who isn't doing it to rob liquor stores......

Yep. I argue this point at work all the time with the Libs. They just cannot understand that in one hour 300 plus rounds are expended. I tell them I go through a minimum of a thousand rounds in the summer months in one month if I go multiple times to the range and they say it's still too many to keep at home.
Then I tell them that their argument is that we lowly civilians aren't trained like the military and police so when we do train it's a problem and don't train it's a problem.
They don't even know what they are arguing about.

So then the only way you could have too much ammo is if you're storing it in a weak structure that could collapse. Do yourself a favor and don't waste time arguing with these people.
