Continous trip. In both of your examples, those transfers must be conducted where the gun is "legal", otherwise they are violations. That's why people get arrested in airports - during stopovers.
If a NJ gun owner took a bus to Newark then walked into the terminal with their gun in a locked box, they'd be legal. If a NY gun owner did so, they wouldn't be. Get it?
