Owego Sanmina plant shutting down, more than 300 employees to be laid off

An Owego factory will soon shut down after hundreds of employees were told they will lose their jobs.

Tioga County Director of Economic Development and Planning LeeAnn Tinney says that around 50 temporary employees at Sanmina Corporation's Owego location were laid off on Thursday, with the remaining 274 full-time employees given a 90-day termination notice.

"A layoff of this magnitude in such a small community really is going to have a dramatic impact. However, we're actively working on assisting those people that are going to be without work," said Tinney.

The company manufactures optical, electronic and mechanical products.

Town of Owego Supervisor Don Castellucci told 12 News he learned of the plant shutting down on Thursday morning.

Best thing for these unfortunate folks, and I really sympathise as I've been through that multiple times in NY, is to start looking for work outside of NY.

I thought I saw a post to that effect earlier. Sorry lady! Only a temporary setback I hope! You could alwyas get a job as a trucker, industry cant get enough people!

If we end up having to sell the NJ house and move to PA, hubby may be doing exactly that. We're going to try and stay in NJ if at all possible, rather than uproot the kids again. Plus, our part of PA is so rural that they wouldn't be able to continue in most of the activities they're doing now.

I signed my daughter up for a CreativeCloud account (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and am teaching myself Illustrator. It's been one of the big hurdles for me in getting a design job. Everything is done on the computer these days, and getting out of college in '88 - heck, we barely had internet at that point. (Remember AOL chatrooms, lol?) The other big issue is going to be the length of time I spent out of the work force as a stay-at-home mom.

As much as I'd love to carry in NYC if HR 38 passes, my next job is going to be remote. NYC is generally filled with disrespectful pricks most of the time, from my experience working down there for the last six years or so now.

Just went through a new round of interviews, and I have a friend who works at one of these remote work places. Think there is a good shot I'll wind up in PA or TX within the year.
