That's exactly what I like about my '71 GMC. Point ignition and a Q-jet.
I've been looking for a 4x4 to use hauling firewood and whatnot, seen a Unimog locally but it needs too much work for what the guy wants for it. Seriously considering picking up an LMTV though, if I can find one for the right price. I've seen them go at auction as low as $5000 for a running and driving truck. Cat diesel and EMP hardened. Hell, even have a gunner port in the roof

I am concerned for numerous reasons. Just about anything could happen. No matter how much you think it through, choosing the correct vehicle can be daunting to say the least.
I would suggest to all, learn to hot wire a vehicle. It is not as hard as some would think. If certain things do occur, this is a tool that is invaluable.

I would also suggest, learn how to siphon gas from one vehicle to the next.
Back on, I chose a Jeep Wrangler. Many reasons. There are a lot of them on the road if I ever need to fix mine. Compact but large enough to do what I need. 4x4. Probably the most important part of the choice.
Everyone in the family also have bikes. I own quads as well.

I like the Jeeps too, they'll go places a full sized 4x4 can not go, and like you said plenty of spare parts.

When gas stations go down you can run on modestly refined cooking oil, farms will have plenty of fuel, and they love heating oil. When SHTF you'll do what ever you have to and siphoning someone's kero from their heating tank isn't even going to be a passing though. There's a lot of videos showing how to make your own cooking oil refinery also. Another big benefit is a lot of them, other then the new fly by wire diesels, do not require any electric source to run. Only enough battery to run the starter. No worry of ignition or plug wires to go bad or short out. If it's a standard you can pop start it if on a hill.

I use to subscribe to a bigger vehicle (4x4) w/ big tires- go anywhere, drive over anything kind of vehicle. And maybe pull a small trailer. But how far will I get before needing to refuel. After hurricane Sandy w/the long gas lines & people scrambling around fighting over gas, I'm rethinking a fuel efficient small SUV w/ a few bikes hanging on the back (backup) for a bugout vehicle.

If you're worried about EMP, it wouldn't be hard to keep spares for the emp vulnerable components for a vehicle in a hardened container.

I currently have a Subaru Outback with all weather tires. Stows a lot and more can be put on top. If I could, I'd also have a truck with bikes or motorcycles in tow.
OffGrid had a nice setup a few issues ago - truck with a trailer completely outfitted to camp for an extended period of time, popup tent/storage on top, and a bike to boot. I love these mags, but I'm fucking broke.

That looks tiring, lol.
We have many years of experience spending very long periods of time(several months) living from horseback. Our horses are not your average trail nags. They also have experience with long periods in the mountains, travelling miles a day with a heavy load. They are full of spirit and love adventure.

This is the one thing most people don't know about horses: they LOVE to work! It's actually a form of cruelty NOT to work them. It's the same as dogs, and how they NEED discipline and direction.
All those folks in NYC upset about handsome cabs. The horses LOVE pulling weight.
We had a pair of Percherons that would get angry and snippy if we didn't take them out in the woods and let them chain-drag big logs, whole fresh-cut trees, big rocks, mountains, etc! We had an old Ford pickup behind the barn. No wheels or tires on it. Jake and Luke used to RUN to it whenever they were let out because they enjoyed dragging it around so much.
After a good lather, they were docile as kittens and would actually lay down and frolic in the grass so all the neighborhood kids could climb on them!
Horses need regular work.

Absolutely true. On GM full size trucks, the only susceptible thing is the computer which is right on the fenderwell (and the 4wd computer if you have push button soccer mom 4wd.) Replacements are all over ebay for cheap. Some need to be coded to your vehicle by a dealer or a good repair shop with the right equipment. Then just store in a faraday cage.

We increased our paddock from 5 acres to 15 acres for our four horses. Now they have a pond, a creek, woods and meadows to hang out in. Every single day we ride them for hours. We actually use them for working the farm instead of 4 wheelers like most farmers. Our horses work cattle, pull logs...etc. Everything but plow fields, thats a bit too much, I use my small Ford 6000 for that.
We go on extended camping trips around NY and PA several times a year. Going on horseback into the wilderness is one of my passions, I was born 100 years too late.

For me a bug out is walking from my barn to the main house and assembling a 1919A4. But my 4x4s are an F150 STX Sport off road, a GMC Suburban, an Avalanche, 4 ATVS, 2 snowmobiles, a Deere Gator UTV, and a Deere 4045D Turbo Diesel. There is nothing I can't do on this farm or to protect this farm.
