Vehicles for SHTF or bugging out.

I don't mean to be a debbie downer but I don't see a legit need to sink resources into a dedicated bug out vehicle.

Here's why I think so.

1- you need a big out location, or a big out vehicle is useless. If you have no where to go you will end up running out of fuel and resources. The only exception would be perhaps some type of RV or camper would be useful.

2 I think your better off keeping a low profile. Just use your daily driver as a 4wd truck or suv. Your better off spending the money on good tires,skid plates, brush guards, winch etc but try to stay as incognito as possible. Be the Gray man when getting out of town.

3- if there is an emp or grid down if your bug out vehicle is still operational the roads will all be gridlocked and refuel will be extremely difficult.

4- where is your bug out location? Is it within a few days walk or a thousand miles away?

If it's 1000 miles away how do you realistically expect to make it there? If it's 100 miles away maybe save the money and buy yourself and the family some nice bikes and bike trailers. Use your financial resources for other supplies or on a bug out location.


I like the idea of a bug out vehicle I just honestly cannot find a legit practical use for one. Because if you actually need it you probably can't use it (emp, gridlocked roads, no refuel, or panicked people who see you and your awesome rig as a target/resources/threat)



If someone has a different opinion by all means let me know. I'm always willing to listen and re evaluate my opinions and strategy. It just seems like a fun you but no real purpose.

I have to partially agree, for most people a dedicated BOV is a waste. What I find funny is certain people who are big into it, but lack any off road driving experience at all. Even the best vehicle will get stuck or broken if you don't know what you are doing. I can see certain people having one that live really close to big cities. Those areas will be the first to go down hill and I see no sense sticking around unless you have a well stocked small army staying with you. People further out would be best with something they use often as a back up for when the time comes they decide they have to move on.
Where I'm at I can drive snowmobile trails all the way to Canada if need be, I live right on a NYS trail. I can definitely see a need for a truck, a serious rough duty one. The time will come when you would need to resupply, might as well be able to carry as much as possible without having to make multiple trips. You get out in the hills and you're likely so see people driving this type of truck daily anyway just because they can or they got a sweet deal on one. Congested roads,ehh, nothing a stout truck can't handle, even the lowly Ford F-350 hahaha. The median makes a pretty good roadway, BTDT with a wrecker when I needed to get to an accident and couldn't get by traffic. Push em pull em drive around em. Whatever works.

None of my vehicles are dedicated bug out vehicles, they're simply vehicles, or tools for mobility. Different vehicles for different situations, just like we have different firearms for different applications. Some vehicles are more adept at traversing varied terrain than others, you don't see too many Toyota Priuses going four wheeling in the back country. And just like there's no firearm ideal for all situations, there's no one vehicle that's ideal for all terrain. As mentioned previously, in some cases simply walking or using a horse may be the best solution. How's that saying go, "Adapt and overcome?"

Pretty much this. IMO the only bug out vehicles worth a damn are either of the boat variety or the flying variety. If you're relying on public roads, don't bother.
