Wait times Monroe 2021 and the "pistol permit playoff beard "

Today marks day 210. As written before, there has been some movement as references and I have been contacted within the last month. It somewhat feels as if a little of the anxiousness has been removed from the entire process. By no means is this the end, and anything can happen between now and the final determination, but of the entirety of the process, contact being the only part I would be privy of knowing is now in the rearview mirror.

As I mentioned before, a self imposed beard growth was or could have been altered when references have been contacted. I have taken advantage of this, part due to the references, but also due to illness making the beard difficult and, well disgusting as I was sick. Going forward my goal is to once again carry on growing the beard until final word comes in.


Until 240 ( and from my understanding, most likely at least 270 or more), signing off.

I know it's an epic pain in the ass of frustration and violation of your rights, but imagine how hopeless you would feel if you weren't already 240 days into the process and were just beginning it. I tell people all the time just start the process.

Hang in there hopefully not much longer and it will all be worth it. The way the world is going you won't get it a day too soon either.

Its been, as of today, 215 days since I left my application at the county clerk's office. If I recall correctly, it was 197 days from the drop off until my references were contacted.

If something important happens ( IE- references contacted or someone posted something) I log the day here. Otherwise I just post every 30 days.

Welp, 240 days have gone by. As said before, references were contacted on day 196, 44 days ago. When contacted I was told it will be most likely 2-3 more months until a determination is sent in the mail, so at least 1 1/2 of that time has passed. My estimate, which is purely a guess, is most likely beyond the 270 day mark leaning heavily on 300+. Still feel a bit relieved that at least references were contacted and hopefully this will come to a decision within the next few months. Beard restarted and beginning to fill back in.

I appreciate the response a lot as it does give hope I will receive word soon and I'm also glad this chain of posts did what I hoped it would do. Shed light on the timeline from beginning to end. Congratulations! I've enjoyed reading your posts here and glad you have come to the conclusion. You've waited longer than I have, and deservedly recieved your permit first. I read your encounter with the individual who had assistance from a Sheriff and glad you tried to keep them honest. Enjoy shooting in the future and look forward to hearing which firearms you obtain coming soon!

I'm sorry I didn't decide to join the conversation sooner, but I like to keep my social exposure minimal. Our experience sounds very similar; the fingerprint machine was down when I got printed as well.

Not meant to sound unsympathetic to those affected by the tragedy in Buffalo last week, but I couldn't help wondering how it might impact the final approval by the judge. Obviously it shouldn't, but people don't always do what they should/shouldn't. If they did, we wouldn't be having this conversation. So, I was pleasantly surprised to get my letter which was approved May 18.

For us already in the queue likely little impact.

I've been researching online to help narrow my options but I'm finding that to be a new source of anxiety, albeit a more pleasant one! The fun starts when I can head over to TFP and take a test drive or two or three or....

Welp, I had raised my Hope's due to the responses, but as of yet nothing. I guess my original estimate of June or July at the earliest is probably more realistic.

270. Nine months by 30 days/ month count. No mail today, hence no word. Nearly a month has passed since @Irick and @RennBaer have recieved thier notifications and over 70 days since references were contacted. Technically 9 months is Friday as it's the 24th, but I have been consistent in my count as 30 days to a month. My estimation was correct that no word will be received before 270, and now my gut says past 300 days. Disappointing and frustrating doesn't clearly describe it honestly.

These delays are ridiculous. Talk about dragging your feet. My county clerk’s website used to say 4 months turn around time from submission to issuance, as of March when I submitted mine. Now it says 6+ months due to being so busy. Ugh. I’m guessing I won’t hear a thing now until September. Sucks.

As bad as that timeframe sounds, 6 months is an improvement from Monroe county website estimate of 9-16 months. To even ask where my permit is in the process, I need to make an appointment at thier office.

The schedule is booked until Mid July.

That alone is another month just to ask a question.

But, I just can't help wondering why I'm so much further ahead in the process. We both submitted in mid-September, and our references were called within a day of each other. The only thing left for you should be the judge's approval. Is it just luck of the draw which judge reviews your application? Maybe, I don't know, but I would think if there were some issue causing the delay you'd have heard about it by now. Otherwise, there is no good reason for the disparity. I am a vet and did include my DD-214, but I've never heard of that being a determining factor and for all I know you may be as well.

Have you considered sending an email to MCPistols@monroecounty.gov for an update? I did that about 2 weeks after receiving my approval letter, they answered the next day.

I was going to go there to ask for an update, to which they can only tell me if its with the police, judge or clerk, and they stated I needed to show proof of identity. I don't know if I could do that via email, but I could try it :]

I just sold a pistol to friend who lives in Monroe county on Saturday. The soonest he could get an appointment to add it was July 6th. I still can’t believe they only do appointments for adding or dropping. I guess I’m spoiled in Erie county where I can do everything same day. I always thought Monroe county was more friendly to 2A but it seems like Erie county is way for friendly to 2A. It’s rediculous in how much variance there is from county to county in the same state. It should be the same for the entire state regardless of which county you deal with.

Yeah, just occurred to me I was able to reference the permit number in the email. Apparently that number is issued when approval is granted and is noted in the approval letter. I'm sure that helped.

Maybe it's worth a try, what's the worse that could happen? If you decide to, I think I'd offer as much identifying info as was provided on the application; when you applied, when your references were contacted, etc., and that although you realize you're still within the 'approval time frame', you are concerned you may have missed the mail or something and feel it's important to follow up promptly. Kind of hard for them to fault you for being responsibly prudent. Maybe you'll get lucky.

It's funny that such an epochal process as approving your constitutional right(?) culminates with them sticking your permit in unregistered snail mail with zero notice and zero verification that it indeed reached the intended recipient so critically vetted over the past 9++ months. Mail theft is still a thing right? Not that I want another layer of BS, but way to maintain the integrity of this oh-so critical process. The real intent is to frustrate and deter rather than validate and protect, but we already knew that. Hang in there.

I just added 3 pistols to my new permit by mail, they said to allow 14 days but I had the coupons and updated permit mailed back in a 6 days. Maybe that would be quicker?

The problem is his wife gets the mail so he doesn’t know if he would be able to intercept the mail before she gets it

LOL, so I assume he'll get the 'I can't believe you bought another gun' rant? That's funny, also sad but funny.

I meant to comment on your point about it should be the same for the entire state...I agree, but only if it got easier overall. It's more likely to get harder for the counties that have it easy than easier for the counties that have it harder. Equity In NY means suffering is acceptable as long as it's evenly distributed, well, for the masses anyway.
