Where do you get your NY compliant ar barrels?

For some reason it is still very difficult to find 16" unthreaded barrels. Where do you get them? Or do you weld something into the threads (or grind them off)? Does taking an angle grinder to an 18" threaded to bring it down to 16" unthreaded pose any concerns?

YES! Cutting and recrowning a barrel is something that should be done on a lathe by someone who knows what they are doing. It's precision work, not "angle grinder" work.

Last threaded barrel I dealt with, I pinned a thread protector on. I milled a blind pocket to give a press fit so I'm plenty satisfied with the permanence of it.

You can get target crowned barrels but the easiest way is to find vendor that does custom, to order stuff. Columbia River Arms toward the cheaper end (although not cheap when compared to the stuff from PSA, Bear Creek and the like), Kreiger toward the more expensive end - tons more in the middle. Off the shelf TC is tough to find.

I'm also going back and forth on an AR build. I'm now leaning towards a boring non evil rifle with no fun parts. The biggest reason is I want to be able to use detachable mags.

I am seeing the difficulty in finding a barreled upper that will work and not be too expensive


Anyone have any thoughts or experience with These?

A thread protector is the easiest to do yourself. Cutting an 18 to 16 is the cleanest. Any competent Smith can do either.

Does anyone really buy "NY Compliant" barrels? It's all honor system. You just can't have the pistol grip, flash hider, detach magazine, etc all at the same time. But it's perfectly legal to buy an AR upper with flash hider any time you feel like it. And a lower for a 30 round detach mag any time you want. And a pistol grip any time you want. Just don't use your AR outside of your own land if you keep every cool thing on it at once.

Well I don't have my own land, I have a range, so it really does need to be compliant!

Buy all the stuff in non-compliant mode; then just put the parts together to be compliant before you drive down there. Maybe one day you want to use a pistol grip; some other day you wish you had the flash hider, and yet another day you wanna remove your magazine. You can have all the cool stuff individually; but just not all at the same time.

Even if you brought a non-compliant rifle to the range how would anyone know if you had, or had not, registered it as a 'assault rifle'?

Is LE allowed to spot check (run your serial number) without just cause?

That's an excellent question. Can they just say being curious is their cause? I fear that Uncle Sam can do whatever they want. I think I posted it here a year ago, but the police were bringing forest rangers with them instead of getting search warrants. Apparently Ranger Rick can go on your property any time he wants to make sure you aren't beating up Yogi and Boo Boo and does not need a warrant. Then Ranger Rick says to Five-O that he or she thinks they saw something squirrely that becomes cause enough for the Po-po to enter the property immediately without a warrant. Someone is in danger, I smelled gas, that sort of thing I guess.

About a decade ago I got to see cops do whatever they want with abolute impunity. Many decades ago my wife (an MD) started helping battered women in her clinic. Many of these woman had no place to go and couldn't afford a pot to piss in. So she helped them get welfare and food stamps so they didn't have to go home to the wife beaters. After she sold the clinic and we moved to GA, some assholes in CA audited every one of those woman and found10 errors. So asshole Schwartzenegger signed a governors warrant. Paulding County cops came to my farm in GA and said they had a warrant. I asked to see it; and they pushed past me and pinned me to the wall inside the doorway and just went right into the house looking. After her arrest I called Meghan Strickler, who is a famous lawyer on CNN as an expert. Meg immediately did her magic and called the GA governor to get her released; though it took 4 days due to the weekend. Long story short; they did all this bullshit just to fine my wife 10 charges of $150; so they put her in prison for 4 days without showing a warrant due to $1,500. Idiotic. And of course Meghan's bill was somewhere around $10K. Moral of the story - cops do whatever they want, whenever they want. They will shoot and kill innocent people, violate your bill of rights, and violate federal or state code just because they think the end justifies the means.

You can tell I haven't taken my PTSD meds - I am all spooled up and upset now. Time to shut down for a bit.

I have spent many nights online looking for a barrel to meet my specs. Either it was the right profile and not the right twist rate, wrong steel, not target crowned, wanted a pin on FSB, etc. Finally I stumbled on Ballistic Advantage. They have gone out of there way to accommodate me and there barrels are top notch!

OK just go ahead and mess with my OCD. ;-( their <> there <> they're.

Have you shot any Palmetto State Armory? I ended up going with them for the Wylde upper and nickel boron FA bolt. But now I am hearing they don't do their own machining and farm out the work to any of a whole host of mil-spec manufacturers and that you can sometimes end up with garbage. Not sure if that's true or not; but I should have done my homework better. It shoots well though, so maybe I got lucky.

I don't think it's worth the risk personally. I could be pulled over for speeding and then the cop decides I am "shifty", or whatever excuse is used to get a warrant to search my trunk. Then they find it, confirm it's not registered. Now I get a record.
