Just for the heck of it. I'm getting the itch. We all have our lists so I know you all can relate. I'm not saying I will be buying another any time soon, but I'm wanting some opinions and discussion.

Bought a Ruger PCC9 a few months ago. Got a Saiga 762.39 couple weeks ago.
And I still want a 308 in a AR or M1A. I can’t decide!

AR, all the way. I will always maintain that a Garand is more fun to shoot than an M1A. And the cost is similar.

Garand. Especially in NY. Ammo costs will be higher but the Garand is a big part of American history. And they are so much fun to shoot. The top loading/ejecting enbloc clips are unique, novel and convenient.

I love mine.
Everyone goes on about the "PING" so much that it's become a cliche but it's so damn cool that it doesn't matter. @ArmedCorgi, you will love the ping, eveyone around you will love the ping.

How many chips do you like to try before you are done ?
My Garand is a special grade. Best grade for a shooter, new Criterion barrel and a new stock with refurbished GI parts. Mine is a 30-06 though.
Even if it's more expensive I think the original caliber gives the Garand just that little extra zazz. And Federal and Prvi Partisan both offer Garand specific M2 ball loads. I think Fiocchi does as well.

People love the ping but hate the M1 Thunb.
Go M1 first, you won't be sorry. You can pick up a 5 round clip for deer hunting.
I bought my Springfield about thirty-five years ago at the Syracuse gun show, my friend I went with got a IBM if I remember right.
Fun gun to shoot. I almost bought a M1 Tanker about 18 years ago at a gun show in Portland Oregon, the guy wanted $800, I had it but didnt want tompart with it.
I have only seen a couple for sale since then and a whole lot more money.

M1 thumb is easily avoided and not the end of the world when it does happen. It just really smarts.
I'm voting for the Ruger PCC. A 9mm carbine can be great fun. Ammo is readily available and cheap enough. Stick a red dot sight on it and you have a great plinker or home defense weapon good out to 100+ yards. Slap a Streamlight TLR1 on it for home defense. Grab a bunch of Glock mags and it's a perfect partner to your G19/17/26. Break it down and it travels very well in a backpack. Move to another state and get the barrel threaded and stick a can on it for suppressed shooting. In the unlikely event that you have a problem, Ruger has excellent customer service. At around $500 you can't go wrong!
M1's are a lot of fun so really cant go wrong there. Carefully about ammo though. Deff was shooting a buddies dads M1 with some off the shelf ammo (I meant to buy 30-30 and in my rush grabbed some '06 so I got to shoot the M1 a second time) well that second time on the second pull of the trigger that is to a mix of light primes and a heavy bolt/recoil spring that bitch took off for rounds 2-8 .
That ping was so much if a relief after trying to hold on to a runaway 30-06.

JFYI; IBM only made the .30 M1 carbine.
The "tanker" version was never a GI issue but a post war civilian modification , be very wary of these.
Shuff's is the only legit seller I know of for shortened or "tanker" M1 Garands.

If you get the Garand get a schuster vented gas plug for it. The ammo isn’t really anymore expensive for the garand than it is for the M14. Reloading will cost you a few cents more per round Over the 308.
