I feel the same way. The Marine Corps feels the same way as well. They are actually eliminating the M249 Saw carried 1 per 4 man team in favor of the M27 Infantry rifle. They have tested this in the fields of Afghanistan and have come to the conclusion that it is more effective to provide accurate fire at distances rather than volume of fire.

They are combining the Designated Marksman and the automatic rifleman together. The capability for auto fire is there but this rather focus on accuracy.
Maby the Warsaw pact dropping the RPD for the RPK was a smarter move than peope give then credit for. I don't see why they need a new type of weapon though with non-interchangeable parts. They could just use an HBAR upper with a bipod and maby a clubfoot butt for that RPK style grip with the left hand grasping the buttstock.

I don't really want a full auto, not unless I got guys in trucks (donkeys?) hauling ammo out to me on demand. Harassing pot shots and aimed precision fire are the order of the day of an irregular. At least half our range time would probably be better spent learning how to make underarm deodorant and toothpaste into explosives.
Should probably figure out some sort of ad hoc technical.
