From experience I can definitely say without a shadow of a doubt that I'm more surgical with a carbine.
I'm not interested in being sloppy. Every shot will be aimed to the best of my ability and if that's not possible, I can put a hell of a lot of firepower down range with reloads compared to shotgun.

I remember seeing the metal filings.....looking for the shell, to confirm it was loaded, i was unable to see it. The barrel was too long. In the end. It was loaded.
I had my hand on the business end too....briefly.

You cannot do hot reloads on a closed bolt with 30 in the magazine. At least on milspec mags you can't.
I don't doubt you are but, how long has it been since you have been in the dynamic situation you are talking about to fighting in? For me it has been a long while since I have been in the situation with all the physiological changes rushing through my body.

Its just how ive always loaded them, old habits. As will said, if doing a reload with closed bolt (admin reload), a 30rnd mag may not seat properly.

It's fact that you can put more rounds downrange with a magazine fed rifle than a tube feed shotgun and be more accurate. No?
The relevance is tunnel vision. It is a fact that most shootouts end without someone being shot. The shotgun is more forgiving during a dynamic shootout.

I invite you both to come down for some range time. While we are shooting i can demo all my rifles as well as demo how ALL of them can be reloaded on a closed both with a 30 (and a 40) round mag. Fully loaded. I do it ALL the time.

Honest answer. Just as situational awareness when away from the home is a part of a personal defense plan, so it is when at home.
I would make sure my plan at home is for other family members to know how to conduct themselves, where they should go, how long to stay and by what route to flee if they must. It is really no different than the idea of practicing with your firearm. They certainly would be behind me at all times. This of course is for a night time or even evening intrusion. You can bet that if someone is at my door even as early as prime time viewing I will be answering the door alone and would not have youngsters hanging on me.
Now, to be fair I must consider the possibility of someone grabbing a loved one in the back yard or even on the street. In those possible situations I do not believe I am going to have a rifle or a shotgun in my hands. And if I did I would be offering him everything I own before I "take the shot". And remember that "shot" will most likely be with open sights. How quick can you bring a scope on the target in the situation we are discussing. If the bad guy is serious about doing you or anyone harm when he sees you raise that rifle his trigger finger will be in action. ( or knife etc ) And then there comes the fact that they will probably be a moving target. I don't think they will pose for a precision shot. And I certainly would not be putting a handgun into play. That is why I said I really don't know which is best. Use whatever suits you and your plan. If you are 100% sure and you have committed yourself in advance to take a precision shot at someone who is armed and holding a loved one as a shield, then a very accurate and reliable rifle that you are extremely comfortable and confident using would be for you. No argument from me. However, what is best for one may be the worst for another.
I just don't see a need to condemned the shotgun as a PD choice.

I've had the prebans which are the same as issues in the military and have never been able to get the mag to seat on a closed bolt.

I unfortunately do. I knew going into this some might get offended or see the facts and ignore them for whatever reason. It's hard to see things a certain way after they have been done for years another. To those that see the facts... Cool. To those that see them yet find excuses anyway, good luck.
I believe that a shot in close proximity of another family member is a very real possibility no matter what anyone says. Especially in the dark when everyone is split up in their OWN bedrooms or scattered throughout the house. The gunman could be anywhere and my family could be anywhere. They aren't all holed up behind me in the bedroom.
If I am to take him out, I cannot second guess myself on if a shot to the gunman will also kill my loved one a foot to his right. That'll kill me, my loved one, or both us.
And since I'm alone and doing the only shooting as one poster said earlier, I will need as much capability as possible from the firearm I grab to defend my family from ALL scenarios since there will be nobody behind me to take the shot if I'm not able to.

That has been taken into consideration as well which has been factored into my choice of selecting a PCC or pistol.
I have 4 places in my home where a 30 foot shot is possible. The weapon of choice depends on the direction the shot has to be taken some are suitable for shotgun others are only suitable for handgun or carbine.

Why would you be shooting in the pitch black outside if the scenario is that someone broke into your house? If I'm shooting into the dark randomly, I'm leaning toward a belt fed with tracers every 10 or so rounds. But truth be known, a muzzle flash is a big bulls eye on your chest. Randomly shooting into the dark and hoping for the best will just end a person up dead on their porch. Every shot you take should be a kill shot IMHO. Anything else is just putting the odds in the enemy's favor.
I don't foresee shooting into the dark either, only if there was a chance of gunfire going off into the unknown ~ if I miss or mess up ~ I'd much rather it be 50-yard buckshot than 1000-yard bullets.
A lot of you guys seem really certain of how your home invaders are going to act ;-p I'm sure they'll all be reasonable and logical and present excellent easy-to-hit target profiles with enough mass to prevent any rounds from traveling beyond their bodies.

If I was an in intruder, the sound alone would tell me as someone said before, your location, how many rounds you have more or less, your lack of armor penetration, ect.
The only sound I should be hearing is silence.
