Sandy Hook clearly unleashed the response against those decisions by the tidal wave of attempted gun control and tyranny that has gone on since. If you do not have the political and moral fortitude and savvy to recognize that, I'm not sure what else to tell you. The drumbeat against all lawful weapons, but particularly against so-called "assault style" semi-autos that look scary, rose to a political furor with the advent of the sunset of the previous AW Ban after the 10 year window and the subsequent massacre at Sandy Hook. Many laws were passed with political hacks stating clearly that they weren't going to let the Supremes strike down gun laws that had been in effect for a century or more, just as that bitch Hochul is openly stating and doing right now.
