Silly question about initial permit application

Okay so I searched all over but couldn't find what I needed. I am applying for a permit in Putnam and have everything I need except for the justification letter. Can anyone let me know what type of wording they are looking for in this letter. I searched everywhere and can only find sample letters for ccw not new permits. Thanks

Years ago in Orange County my letter just said this.

To Whom It May Concern;

I am seeking a pistol permit for recreational target shooting, personal defense, and all other lawful activities such as hunting and competition . I am proficient in the safe handling of firearms due to instruction and time served in the military, my handling of various rifles and shotguns that I currently own, and classroom instruction taught to me by NRA certified instructors.

Well, I didn’t put the plebian part in there and it sucks that you have to suck to get permission to exercise your rights but that’s what got me my unrestricted license right off the bat without having to get a restricted one like most do in Orange County.

I applied to putnam short and sweet . They get a ton of letters probably ot looking for a novel.
mine said something like .

my name and address I would like to apply for my pistol permit for all legal and lawful purposes .

everyone i interacted with from Putnam county clerks and sheriff was very polite and helpful

I wouldnt stress it, just apply the less you say the less you can say wrong. Just ask. Putnam sheriff used to do free firearm safety classes.

After 6 months take a live fire class apply for your carry.

Judge Reitz issued restricted permits off the bat for the most part but issued unrestricted fairly easily after 6 months on your permit and proof of live fire. I dont know what the current deal is in Putnam in terms of judges. I didn't have to write a letter at all several years ago when I got mine.

Charlie, good luck with the process. The folks involved are helpful and nice. Would love to hear how it goes and what the current state of play in the office is, I am thinking of picking up some new pistols this Summer but not sure what the deal is right now at the clerk's office in processing amendments.

The permit you will be issued is a CCW permit.

It may have administrative restrictions on it, but it's a CCW permit in NYS.

Trying to remember...

The main thing is the detective is going to ask you if there is *anything* you did not include in your application vis a vis you interacting with police / courts / etc. The answer to this should be "no" because you put down everything (including stuff lawyers told you was expunged / squashed / sealed), right?

The only other question of substance I can recall had to do with my divorce just to confirm it was in fact amicable (which it was).

PS do your best to keep the interview short; he's not going to be fishing but that doesn't mean you have to take him on a 3 hour tour, either. Mine was very cordial, professional, and downright friendly.

Thing is I did leave something off because it was when I was a minor and when I spoke to the county office they said there was no record of it. It was over 35 years ago.

Be honest about it (and mention that conversation, obviously). Hopefully not a huge deal. I dont know about now but my (current) wife had something similar- she was the victim of identity fraud in high school, some girl somehow got one of her checks and kited it and it took some sorting out. Reitz made her jump thru the training and bolted down safe hoops that an unrestricted permit would, just for a sports/target. Which she did but it was still kind of stupid since I got mine right off the bat so there would already have been pistols in the house.

As for the underage omission. I think that was a mistake for you to leave off the initial application. I would 100% bring it up, explain it, and detail the conversation you had with the official that told you to exclude it. I'd say after further reflection you should have included it in the first place.

I know others will disagree with that advice but I've always been honest and forthright with my past and never been denied.

The 'county office' that told you there is no record of it is full of shit. I'd wager every future paycheck of mine there is absolutely a record of it. This is your one opportunity to come clean divulging the facts as you recall them. They know about it. Take it to the bank.

@masterswimmer I 100% agree with everything you said, except for one thing- "wear a suit."

And the *only* reason I disagree is because in Putnam the initial interview is with a Sheriff's Department detective, not the judge. I wore a pair of 5.11's and a nice polo shirt to mine. If that's changed and you're going to court for the interview, @PutnamCharlie, yeah absolutely I would wear a suit. I never have walked into a courtroom not wearing one.

My guess would be that Charlie goes to the interview and then may have to step up in front of the judge on another date- but I'm basing that on Judge Reitz (RIP) several years ago. I'm not actually even sure who the licensing officer is these days (and I'd be curious to know- it damn well better be an elected in Putnam judge as it should be).

As far as Iv'e been told it's just at the clerks office. I will also bring up the incident as a minor. I also doubt that they will find any information about it. I don't remember much about it since it was so long ago but I do remember being told that it would be destroyed when I turned 18 (could have been a lie) but who knows. It wasn't like it was a felony or anything that crazy. I had several phone conversations with the lady who is in charge of Suffolk county records and she assured me there was nothing to find. She is a very nice lady and she knew it was for a pistol permit inquiry. You also have to remember it was back in 1980 so it was a pretty long time ago at this point.

Doesnt matter what the outcome is,if you are arrested there will always be a record of it.It may not be "open for public view",but the sheriffs investigators are not the "public",they can access any sealed records.It WILL come up and they will know about it.Even if you are found not guilty and your attorney "gets your prints back",they only get a copy,the originals will always be there and available to certain viewers.Depending on the investigator doing your case it could be a problem,he could consider it omission and deny the app.

I wore jeans and a polo to see the sheriff deputies. It’s very informal. All they do is go over your application and tell you to write statements if there is something that needs to be cleared in your application.

If you have to see the judge, that’s when you go in business attire.
