I don’t think there are laws against baiting chipmunks.
Keep parallax in mind when you’re choosing scopes. This is especially important, if your going to be engaging targets at less than 30 yards.
I’ve got a Bushnell Banner in my dead scope collection as well.
Actually, I probably have almost a dozen old scopes that fit into this category. I’d love to donate them to a good home. I just have to get of my ass and be organized.
That factory Ruger 10/22 barrel will never stand up to Savage MKII. However, I have a Savage 93 R 17HMR that is not as accurate as my 10/22 with a Green Mountain Heavy Barrel. The Savage has a Nikon Prostaff 5 4-14x40 of all things. It’s the same scope I have on my Savage Axis 2 223 and...
I had a BSA Sweet 22 on my Marlin XT-22 before I traded it for a CZ 455. I hunted with it for years and I have nothing bad to say about it. I still have in my closet. I may end up throwing it out. That would break my heart, but it is just taking up space.
I’m kind of at a loss what to recommend ever since Nikon stopped making scopes. Of my 3 10/22, two have Nikon Rimfire scopes and the third has tech sights.
You should resist the urge to go cheap on a scope. I have a crate full of those and you’ll end up pitching them. I’m beginning to think...
I got some reasonably shaky and blurry video shooting at the 700 and 1000 yard targets. The near freezing temperature, wind, and rain made things a little challenging. The chromatic aberration in my cheapo spotting scope wasn’t helpful either.

More load testing for the Ruger American 308. I loaded up the remainder of the Hornaday 168 Grain A-MAX. It has a reasonable BC, 0.475. Not quite at the 6.5 level, but respectable for a 30 cal, 168 grain bullet. I also boosted the charge weight to 41.5 grains of H4895. I new from...
I find that complaints about the lack of sturdiness of the Ruger American are very superficial. The factory stock is light, but it is technically sophisticated for a plastic stock. Someone picking it for the first time at a gun store may think it’s just a piece of Tupperware. However, I...
I might have a couple ounces of Benchmark. I like using it when I can find it. It’s fine stuff. Right now I have CFE 223, H4895, and IMR 4895.
As far as the speed limit being self-imposed, you could say that. I’ve just noticed a distinct lack of accuracy when I pushed the bullet faster...
In theory, you are correct. But, this rifle is really sensitive to muzzle velocity. I’ve spent a lot of time wrestling with faster loads and accuracy really suffers. I’ve come to accept that this rifle has a speed limit.
As you know, I’ve been working up a load for my 308. This week I tested 168 grain Sierra Match-King HP. I decided to use 40 grains of H4895.
The twist is that I loaded Starline 308 Match brass with small primer pockets. I have a supply of Remington 7 1/2 small bench-rest primers.
The...
Yes, I’m thinking of lowering the charge weight and seeing if the groups are more consistent. That being said, I can totally see shooting 3 round groups through the same hole. I was shooting 5 round groups with 4 touching and number 5 an inch away.
No evidence. I’m just guessing. The barrel length is not optimized for a 243. I just don’t have problems with charge weights from other chambering. Inconsistent powder burn is a possible culprit.
The standard deviation is a measure of the variation of a sample. The average is a number that quantifies the center of a sample. The average is customarily the arithmetic mean, but not always.
I have this gizmo from Hornady that marries a digit scale and abs auto-trickler. The weights are precise to within a tenth of a grain.
The sample Z-score is a measure of relative placement. It quantifies the number of standard deviations an observation is away from the mean. For example, Z=0...
I had previously loaded 42,43, and 44.The 45 grain looked the best. Velocities on loading tables rarely reflect exact velocities on the bench. Individual rifles will always show variation. Also, 95 gr. is on the low side for that table. I’m considering loading some at 40 and 41 grains, as the...
Deer aren’t a problem. Even with pesky fliers, the SSTs will take a deer. I also have some 100 gr GK. Hopefully, the powder situation will resolve before fall. But, I hate getting that close to deer season and not have something worked out.
I’m trying to work up a hunting load for my Savage Axis 2 243 Winchester. I settled on these Hornady 95 gr. SSTs. due to the lack of available powders, I’ve been loading Hodgdon H4831. It is relatively slow burning and often used for larger calibers. Nevertheless, I’m using what I have and...
In a moment of impulse last December, I ordered an MDT chassis for my Savage Axis 2 243 compact. It was delivered just this week. I’ll give a range report, as soon as I have a chance.
I don’t disagree that it’s a fine choice. From a hand-loaders perspective, the 308 is a bit more versatile. It is more fun to shoot my 6.5 CM and the 1,000 yard target game is addictive. The 308 is no match for the 6.5 CM in that realm.
The 308 is a hunting rifle. The longest I can conceive a shot is 200 yards. If I need more, I’ve loaded some 140 gr Sierra Game Kings for my 6.5 PRC that are super accurate.
The1:10 twist should have no trouble stabilizing the larger bullets and although round-nose are ballistically less efficient, they are more easily stabilized.
The two likely candidates are muzzle velocity and rollout.
The four bottom groups have core of 4 and a flier. The core is loose between...
Here’s an update. I decided on a bear hunting load today. I’m going to use these Hornady A-MAX 168 gr boat tails. I also loaded some 180 grain round nose. But, they had pretty shitty accuracy. I checkEd some old notes about developing a 168 grain target load and used primarily the recorded...
I think of 6.5CM as more of a range toy. Of course, you do want to hunt with a rifle you can shoot a lot.
6.5 PRC is the greatest chambering you’ll never find ammo for.
I hate to admit it. But, my Savage Axis 2 .223 will shoot 3/4 moa with factory ammo and better with handloads. I think poor recoil management is a thing.
Late last year, I was watching an episode of "Meat Eater" on YouTube where he was hunting black bear in Alaska. It put me in mind to hunt some of the local Black Bears that scare city folk so much, they established a early bear season in September.
Looking at my arsenal of rifles, the...
